Fedora 8 installing onto Dell Latitude 610
by Vince O'Neill
I am a compete novice on linux, but want to check this as a viable
alternative, as I work in a school, and we pay thousands to Microsoft!
I have used a live CD to check Fedora out on a laptop, but cannot get sound
to work.
Can someone point me in the right direction to correct this?

OS freezes at SATA-drive activity.
by Strong
It's real nightmare in reaction speed while my hdd starts to work
(just simply doing a thing with swap file, for example) aboudantly! All
apps freeze! And it is on F8 with AMD Turion 64 x2!
So, if You have an answer to the following question(s), please give me
Your reply:
1. Why system freezes if, the SATA drive work is controlled by its one
hardware - namely controller, that since long time ago does all the
work for a drive thus unloading CPU, so why its work has enfluence on
whole the system?
2. What can I do stop such functionility? OR Minimize it at least?
Big thanks for Your replys. If important, the machine is laptop dell
inspiron 1501: AMD Turion 64x2 1,6 , ATI Radeon xPress200 , 512 RAM DDR
532 (functions at 226 MHz) , linux 2.6.23.9-85 .

FC6 to FC8 Upgrade problem
by Trevor Goldsmith
Hi,
I'm trying to upgrade FC6 to FC8 but the installation simply stops when
checking the dependencies for the selected packages.
It gets to about 25% then just sits there doing nothing. There are no
error messages or anything.
This is not the first time I have encountered this problem when trying
to upgrade one version to another and is normally resolved by doing a
clean install, however I don't want to have to do that this time.
Anybody know how to make the upgrade work?
Thanks
Trevor

How to deal with "Partition table on device sda was unreadable"
by Henry S. Greenside
I tried to upgrade my Thinkpad X61s today with a Fedora 8
64-bit distro on DVD. This laptop has been running Vista
Business and Fedora 7 for many months and I have had no
trouble installing Fedora in the past.
But this time I have been stymied. When I tried to install
Fedora 8, I got as far as the screens that ask for language
and keyboard type, but then got this error message
"The partition table on device sda was unreadable"
when I got to the pages related to setting up partitions,
followed by the option to destroy all partitions. (I don't
think so.)
Searching the Internet indicates this is a known bug
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Bugs/F8Common#head-6908d00fe8346c4da773d32c...
and the fix is evidently to type something like
linux libata.ignore_hpa=1
at the boot prompt. I tried this as follows: when I got to
the Welcome screen (the very first screen of the F8 install
procedure), I hit the escape key, which brought me to a some
kind of shell window with a prompt. I then typed the above
line
linux libata.ignore_hpa=1
but ran into the same problem, the partition table was
unreadable, so installation failed.
So I have two questions:
- What am I doing wrong? For example, am I supposed to give
the command
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Bugs/F8Common#head-6908d00fe8346c4da773d32c...
to the prompt at some point during installation?
- Does anyone know how to work around this bug?
Thanks,
Henry

FC8 and Toshiba satellite running from batteries wont boot
by Erick Perez
Hi,
Last night i loaded the latest FC8 on my toshiba satellite l35-sp4068.
it boots fine except for some modules (wifi, toshiba_acpi, etc) but
those problems might be resolved over time.
However what puzzles me is that it runs perfectly when plugged to the AC.
However,
If fc8 is booted and i unplug the AC, it takes over two minutes for
fc8 to "see" that we are now running on batteries.
if i shutdown fc8 then unplug the AC then boot fc8 again, it panics.
kernel starts booting and then panics. it miay be something related to
fc8 not realizing we are running on baterries beacuse if i plug the
laptop again to the AC and boot fc8, it boots perfectly.
some modules do not load.
modprobe toshiba, modprobe toshiba-acpi fail with "device not found".
has anyone experienced fc8 in a laptop where you can boot perfectly
plugged to the ACbut not when running on batteries?
any parameters that can be passed to the kernel at boot?
I have even tried "single" mode at boot, no help.
thanks,
