RFE: Increase NR_CPUS to 4096
by Prarit Bhargava
I've done some testing across various systems (both "large" and "small").
Increasing NR_CPUS seems to have a negligible effect. I see about a 1.1M
increase in memory usage when switching between 128 cpus and 5120 cpus. Since
most systems ship with 4G or more these days, I cannot see an issue with
consuming a small amount of memory like this.
The current NR_CPUS in Fedora is 128 and the current NR_CPUS in RHEL7 is 5120.
I do not see any reason that those values have to be different anymore.
Thoughts/concerns?

kernel.spec: is "Requires: initscripts" really needed?
by Kay Sievers
Heya,
when installing a kernel in a minimal system, it pulls in
a bunch of otherwise not needed packages, because
initscripts.rpm has a dependency on them. Any specific
reason to keep that, or can we possibly drop it?
Thanks,
Kay

Kernel 3.10.1 with an additional four patches[1] doesn't change anything,
also as seen in the kernel 3.11.0-0.rc1.
Does anyone else chase the same case?

FYI: 3.9.10-200.fc18.x86_64 works fine
by Reindl Harald
besides that "3.9.10-100.fc17.x86_64" works fine at least
as VMware guest i can confirm 3.9.10-200.fc18.x86_64 working
on the hardware below as homeserver
* iptables NAT (LAN/WAN/WLAN/Bridge)
* openVPN gateway to company
* two WLAN AP's
* VMware Workstation NAT
* services like httpd/dbmail/postfix/mariadb

OK, but for those of us who use it, the change that presumably causes this
would be this part of this commit:
commit c5a130325f13b219438cb100e2da71a3e31199f3
Author: Chen Gong <gong.chen(a)linux.intel.com>
Date: Thu Jun 6 15:20:51 2013 -0700
ACPI/APEI: Add parameter check before error injection
When param1 is enabled in EINJ but not assigned with a valid
value, sometimes it will cause the error like below:
APEI: Can not request [mem 0x7aaa7000-0x7aaa7007] for APEI EINJ Trigger registers
It is because some firmware will access target address specified in
param1 to trigger the error when injecting memory error. This will
cause resource conflict with regular memory. So It must be removed
from trigger table resources, but incorrect param1/param2
combination will stop this action. Add extra check to avoid
this kind of error.

where the additional EXPORT_SYMBOL_GPL(page_is_ram) above now makes
it available from both kernel/resource.c and arch/x86/mm/ioremap.c.
Why would that make it an unknown symbol?

NFS module for Fedora
by Arnab Bakshi
Hi,
Not sure its the right place to ask but here it goes.
I am using Fedora release 18 (Spherical Cow) with
kernel 3.6.10-4.fc18.i686 as a NFS Server. I have connected to the server
from a client and then trying to Open a file with write_delegation I get a
OPEN response which is malformed.
Response shows that servre grants Write delegation but the response is
incorrect.
Anyone aware of any issue here or maybe can point to the right forum?..

Kernel versioning policy
by Mateusz Marzantowicz
What is a policy of choosing EXTRAVERSION in Fedora kernels? I've found
some short info about what is 200, 300 etc. but I'd like to understand
precise algorithm of giving everything that's between dash and fcNN (NN
- fedora version). What does -300.x mean?
Sorry, for my novice question but I can't find any reliable source of
information about Fedora's kernel version naming policy.
