Going a bit off-topic, but I have two Lenovo laptops (one for home, one for
work) and it is possible to update the bios without Windows. On the Lenovo
website amongst the drivers is an ISO image which can be put onto a CD/DVD or
memory stick for manually updating the bios. You also need to download the
relevant bios image, and put that on to the CD/DVD or memory stick. Booting off
that device it either prompts for the bios image name or assumes it to be
something (I cannot remember which method it uses), but it then updates the
bios for you. Obviously it's a bit scary, you don't want a power cut during the
process, and it rebooting itself a couple of times makes you wonder if it is
actually going to come back to you, but I have done this 3 or 4 times now and
it works fine. As said, no MS Windows required.
