I tested a couple, gmail-plasmoid and the Service Monitor, Using the "add
widgets" option, both download installation and local file installation
fail with no error reported.
The downloaded file was in:
/home/blah/.kde/tmp-localhost.localdomain/
I'll do some more testing and try and get some more verbose output, maybe
start plasma from a shell will help.
OK here is some output running plasma-desktop from a shell trying another
Plasmoid:

plasmapkg(2836)/libplasma Plasma::Package::installPackage:
Package plugin name not specified
Installation of /tmp/kde-g6avk///100348-plasma-applet-magic-
folder_1.2.3.plasmoid failed.
plasma-desktop(2529)/knewstuff (api): Command failed
I doubt this will help much, so I tested with the same plasmoid and manually
unpacked it and ran "plasmapkg -i" against that folder:
@localhost tmp]$ plasmapkg -i 100348-plasma-applet-magic-folder_1.2.3
Successfully installed /home/g6avk/tmp/100348-plasma-applet-magic-folder_1.2.3
As you see that works.
