Recently (last month?) I'm seeing intermittently, long delays on kde startup. The startup draws a horizontal bar, and it hangs maybe 75% of the way for a Long time (30 sec)?
This is on a very fast machine that usually starts kde in a few seconds. Any hints at troubleshooting?

I haven't noticed the the startup is any slower on my not very fast laptop, but I have noticed that the horizontal bar never completes as it used to. Does this mean some part of the startup is not completed?
And could I put a word in for the old startup screen where various icons appeared as the startup progressed.

30 seconds sounds like a DNS name lookup timeout.

no, i have the same and our DNS servers are available as fast as hell because they serve DNSBL for web-application firewalls meaning each webserver request triggers a DNS query and given that we can servce 2500 cms/database-generated pages per second DNS is for sure clean
that's a KDE5 thing and nothing else

There were some issues introduced in kf5-5.14.x (kf5-kservice mostly) that should be fixed in kf5-5.15 (currently in updates-testing).
See if those updates help your case.

at least not here
* login takes long * still half of the desktop freezes after sftp-filetransfers
on a machine where over years the progress display at login was disabled because it was so fast that the was nothing to display
currently the desktop appears *long* after autostarts are done (Firefox, Kopete triggering kwallet, ssh-askpass) because when the desktop appears firefox asks for the master password which normally happens a dozenns of seconds after it was started

Out of interest, if you get a console before login and run "systemctl stop firewalld" before logging in does it make a difference. It did for me but I'm still working on the "why" bit.
Cheers, Brad

hardly, firewalld is masked and not running at all, see at bottom
one of the problem is that at the login time it tries to start way to much crap like NetworkManager.service or upowerd.service multiple times so , just look below what system messages i started to filter out after upgrade to F22 - that's all only bloatware starting to become uncontrollable like Windows or OSX (come on show me how i get my kate settings from my normal user to root since the FIVE files in .config are mot enough)

Different problem to me then, thanks.
In my case I'm seeing a black screen delaying KDE startup, I think it's the same problem of Neal.
I will try to update to Kf5-5.15.

I think we found another source of login delay: plasma-nm and synchronous dbus calls (bluez), see also: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=354230
Patched plasma-nm builds are submitted to -testing: F-23: https://bodhi.fedoraproject.org/updates/FEDORA-2015-042a95f495 F-22: https://bodhi.fedoraproject.org/updates/FEDORA-2015-d15fd5f2f9
there's also another kf5-kservice fix on the way (I'll followup on that in a bit), but initial testing of this plasma-nm build looks very promising.
