Since today's f16 update, yumBackend.py seem to being running 100% cpu every few minutes. I think this also happened a few months ago but got OK but now it seems to be back.
OK, here's where it's described: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=752564
I had set my kde apper check for update interval to "weekly" and that "fixed" it. But now it doesn't care and just does the check every 5 minutes regardless.

It's PackageKit, most likely. Try running gpk-prefs.
Best,

gpk-prefs has no effect whatsoever under KDE Plasma sessions, where Apper is used, not gnome-packagekit.
There is a setting for the frequency of checking in Apper (and "a few minutes" isn't even an option, the minimum is hourly), but it doesn't work, see the bug https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=752564 already linked by the original poster.
There's also this bug filed about the slowness and insane CPU consumption of the checks: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=748790

While that is probably true, I found this to be interesting....
Yesterday I found yumbackend.py running at 100% every once in a while as described. I did a ps and found the parent process for it to be /usr/libexec/packagekitd.
I did run gpk-prefs and didn't think it would have any effect since it was already set to 1-hour. In doing so, I was reminded about a complaint in a different thread about security updates being applied automatically. While that isn't happening, I unchecked that option in the event I may sometime run GNOME.
Anyway, I just checked now and yumbackend.py is no longer popping up from time to time. However, I also ran an update and rebooted due the kernel being updated in that batch.

Only setting to "never" with KDE "Software Management" app seem to stop intensive YumBackend from running every 5 minutes. Rebooting, using gpk-prefs, etc. didn't help. Will now just manually check updates...
