Another mitigation is to use the traditional rather than the Kickoff
menu. I am seeing this with nouveau as well, but I installed from the
nvidia installer, and I believe it may have borked by X. Will try
again with F12 final.
Be warned, there are other bad side-effects to the current nvidia
drivers than just the pausing of kickoff. We've received reports of
other mysterious pauses, failures as well.
