You'd think Nouveau would handle the 710 by now. Although it's not exactly popular anymore afaik

It's an old system:  HP Compaq dc5800 MT, 2x Core2Duo e8200 @2.66 GHz,
7.7 GiB Ram, VGA and HDMI outputs.  I rarely use the nVidia hardware
decoding and use an Android TV player (mythleanfront) for best quality
video.

This new problem is a puzzle, but at present not a gamechanger.
