I've noticed something similar since a week or two ago- not just gvim,
but randomly on any application window (ex. kopete, opera, firefox,
okular, etc.).

I haven't gotten around to filing a bug yet, because I haven't yet
been able to reliably reproduce it, but I'm thinking this is probably
something to do with the compositing effects (I'm on kde4.4.0 from
kde-testing), as I've only seen it since being able to use compositing
for my radeon hd3870.
hd4200 here and kde-testing. Have had compositing on for a while and
don't think I've seen it until today. You're right, I also saw it on
another non-kde app.
