He can't, which is why I asked the question. "yum grouplist" does not
list kde-desktop as a group name.

It isnt directly listed. It is just a shorter version that is less prone to mis-typing etc. No more right or wrong than anyone elses answer. However to answer your question the name can be seen using "yum grouplist -v".
