I think you can just kill nm-applet while testing
kde-plasma-networkmanagement and if it doesn't work you can
start
nm-applet again.
That works. nm-applet will refuse to start if k-p-nm is running
and k-p-nm will only display nm-applet's status if it exists
when it starts. How it is now that it is no longer a plasmoid
(KDED service + system tray), I don't know. A session restart at
least I imagine.
