Yeah, I gave up long ago and just use Gmail and the Chrome Checker Plus extension.  Developers are no longer interested in working on desktop mail, client, contact apps.  Most people now access that stuff on multiple platforms; and companies are now moving away from keeping that stuff in house and are outsourcing it to Google, Microsoft, etc.  Keeping up with spam, virus, etc. is just a headache that no one really gets excited dealing with.  It is labor intensive and mundane.
