I thought upower doesn't influence the fan speeds. I would appreciate if
you'll point me for some differences between HAL and upower.

You know, right now the fan speed is much more aggressive and I have no idea
why it changed. I just wonder if there is some kind of config for fan
control.

It's just the new behavior and it's unusual :)

CPU temperature after update
by Yaroslav Sapozhnyk
Hi,
I have Thinkpad T500 laptop with Fedora 14 KDE installed. Before the KDE 4.6
update the idle CPU temperature was ~42C. However after the update the CPU
temperature varies between 48-50C.
I noticed that the lm_sensors-lib package was also updated so I downgraded
it. But it didn't help. Testing the initial Fedora 14 KDE LiveUSB the CPU
temperature was about 40C so it's not hardware problem.
I did notice that the fan speeds differ from the LiveUSB system now (e.g.
for the same temperature LiveUSB fan speed is higher - so the CPU temp is
lower).
Does anybody know where is the default configuration for the fan speed? I
don't use any fan control programs/scripts.
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks.

Wireless network connectivity problem
by Temlakos
I have a Dell Inspiron 1545, which has a built-in wireless
device--though I never used it until recently, being content to use a
direct wired connection.
A week and a half ago, I took it overseas and there attempted to use a
wireless hotspot at my hotel. But when I tried to use the Network
Configuration and Network Device Control applets, nothing operated, nor
could I find the network, even after typing in the SSID that the hotel
receptionists provided. My fellow travelers were able to use the
hotspot, but not I.
And I've noticed that with KDE, those two applets don't even have an
option to activate or deactivate a network device. The regular Ethernet
device says "inactive" though I know it's active, because I'm using it
right now.
What did I do wrong during installation?
What can I do now to get wireless connectivity working? (Say if I want
to try another local hotspot?)
What should I do when the next iteration of Fedora is released and it's
time for me to upgrade?
Any help would be appreciated.

Disk Sleep + Zombie = Frustration!
by Anne Wilson
Ten years ago I was told that one of the strengths of Linux was that if an
application went down it didn't take other processes with it. Sadly this no
longer seems to be true.
Today I had used GIMP to make a scan of 200MB. When I tried to save it it
started, but then went into Disk Sleep. XSane and, believe it or not, Libre
Office Calc became zombies, responding to nothing that I could find in System
Monitor. Eventually, remember previous episodes, I asked for a system
restart. The shutdown began, then hung, leaving me with no option but to
power down.
I know these are not KDE applications, but tracing the parentage through
System Monitor, it seems to go back to kdeinit (from memory - possibly
inaccurate).
This isn't the first such episode I've seen, though it's the worst for a
while. It's exceedingly frustrating!

Is anyone else here fed up with browsing Konqueror bookmarks ?
by linux guy
I'm running fully up to date KDE in F14.
For a long time I've hated browsing bookmarks in Konqueror when they are
accessed by the menu item.
I have a ton of bookmarks gathered over many years. The folders alone
for all my bookmarks nearly cover nearly a 1680x1050 display in the
menu.
The issue that I have is that once one opens the bookmark menu, its very
hard to go from the "home" area (ie where no bookmark is selected) to
the proper folder. More often than not, a folder gets triggered in
between getting from the home area to the desired folder. Its very
frustrating.
The other problem I have is when using multiple displays, the bookmark
menu opens on the wrong display.
I have 2 displays. The left one is my secondary display. The right one
is the primary display, ie its the one with my menus, task bar, etc.
When I open Konqueror, it displays on the primary display. No issue
there. The first time I open the bookmarks menu, it opens in the
primary display.
The second time I open the bookmarks menu, it opens in the secondary
display, which is not correct in my books.
Both of these behaviors have been present for a long time.
Anyone else have these issues ?
Thanks
