nntp (aka, usenet) client in kde?

I currently use t-bird with an nntp account pointing to gmane to read this list and sereral others. Does kde have an nntp client program of any sort? I don't see it as a possible new account type in kmail. Also, search with kpackagekit yields nothing with "usenet" or "nntp" that is kde specific. -gene

KDE desktop effects

Hi everyone! Every time a new Fedora comes out, when I install it I try to spend some time evaluating the progress of kwin desktop effects, in the hope that they will eventually become feature-full enough to replace compiz (for my particular usecase, that is). So now I have tried them in F13 (clean install from KDE LiveCD and fully updated), and I have several questions: * Is there a way to put a background behind the cube in the desktop cube effect (in compiz this is called "skydome")? * Is there a way to configure the amount of elevation of windows when they are configured to hover outside the cube? Currently they are way to far away from the cube surface, and it doesn't look nice. * Is there a way to include mouse buttons as a keyboard-shortcut action? For example, I would like to have the desktop cube effect activated not with the usual ctrl+f11 combination, but with ctrl+alt+left-mouse-button (as I did in compiz). Mouse buttons do not seem to be accepted in the shortcut dialogs. * I typically use 8 desktops, which kwin has arranged into a 2x4 grid. How can I rearrange this into a 1x8 grid? I don't want to switch desktops up and down, only left and right. * I want to switch desktops when hitting the left/right screen edge, but not when hitting top/bottom screen edge. How can this be configured? Also, is there a way to customize the size of "screen corner" versus "screen edge"? I have a "present windows" effect active in upper-left corner, which works perfectly when edge desktop switching is disabled. But if I enable it and put the mouse into a corner, the desktop switching kicks in rather then the present windows effect, and I cannot seem to hit the very corner with the mouse that easily. So it would be a good idea to customize how "big" is the corner supposed to be. * Is there any equivalent of the "ring switcher" from compiz? That is, window thumbnails displayed in a ring (circle or ellipse), and rotate when alt-tab is being pressed... * Is there a possibility to draw window borders which one can grab with the mouse and have the window fold like a sheet of paper (this makes sense only when window is maximized)? This is a feature of Emerald window decorator in compiz, haven't seen it anywhere else. Kwin doesn't seem to have an option of drawing window borders at all, for maximized windows. * Is there a possibility to download/install extra effects, which are not included in the default install with F13 (do any extra effects exist)? Overall, I've seen a lot of improvement in desktop effects compared to F11 and F12, but it is still not as configurable as compiz. If anyone can answer any of the above questions, I'll try to stick with kwin some more and explore it, otherwise I'll just fall back to compiz/emerald again and wait for F14. Howto switch from 4.5-rc3 to 4.4.5?

Hello, As usual I tested beta/rc builds during the 4.5 development cycle, however at least on my laptop even 4.5-rc3 has many bugy which annoy me and it doesn't look like 4.5 final will be any better. Is there a way back to 4.4.5? Thank you in advance, Clemens

Hello all, I'm seeing a weird bug in both rc2 and rc3. When lock my workstation (using Ctrl-Alt-L) and then unlock (w/ password), re-locking no longer works. I have to either kill kscreenlocker or restart krunner to get it to work again. Anyone else seeing this? - Gilboa

What is kdewallet for?

For some reason, laptop 1 only asks me once for my wallet password when I reboot, and never if I hibernate. However, laptop 2 repeated asks for my kdewallet password when I launch an application. Can I safely disable kdewallet? I really don't understand what it is for. I just find it a nuisance, and it doesn't make me feel any safer.

hi all I'm using fedora with kde for a few weeks and I find it a bit difficult to handle packages kde. The problem I have is that I want to install some kde applications, for example kwrite without having to install all applications in the same group. I was searching the net and it seems impossible, if so I wonder if anyone can tell me why it is, just to know. It was just that, I appreciate if someone can tell me, thanks.

Desktop validation testing: round 1 coming soon!

Further to my earlier email about desktop validation testing for Fedora 14, here's a note - or a reminder, if you knew already! - that our first manual test point for the F14 cycle is due on Thursday, with the Alpha 'Test Compose' (it's a sort of early-warning test build that gives us some time to sort out any major kinks before we start building Alpha RCs). When the build is up, Rui He or I will send or forward you the official announcement, with links to the results matrix and downloads and so forth. This is just a heads-up so you know it's coming soon. It's probably worth doing a quick check of Rawhide to see if there's any huge problems with your desktops which would make the TC completely untestable, and if so, get 'em fixed before we build it :). You can get nightly live builds at http://alt.fedoraproject.org/pub/alt/nightly-composes/ if you want to check quickly without installing Rawhide, though there've been some bugs lately which broke the booting of live images, so they _may_ still be unbootable. The nightlies are built and uploaded automatically, and there are KDE, Xfce and LXDE builds there. I notice that I do not have virtuoso-opensource-utils installed. I ran yum info virt-o-u... and all it tells me is that these are utilities. What would this package do for me? What commands, functions does it provide? What is in it that I might actually like to use or would conceivably use? How do I get yum to tell me the above in the future, without me having to ask on a forum (for similar future cases when I wish to know what a package actually does, since yum info barely ever really tells you much at all upon which to base a should I/should I not install question on)?

Problem with Yum on one of my computers

Hi all Got a weird one. (not kde problem). Even though I have plugins enabled in yum.conf (contents follow) some don't seem to be working on this computer. The plugins that I use most frequently are presto, downloadonly, and priorities and fastmirror. While priorities and fastmirror seem to be working, presto and downloadonly don't seem to work. And I've checked their configurartion file also. and they are enabled. If anyone has any thoughts on this, it would be greatly appreciated. New low contrast icons in 4.5

Hi, I have installed 4.5rc3 and wonder if it is possible to get back the old icons in System Tray. All (almost) icons (klipper, kmix, krandrtray, Battery Monitor widget, Device Notifier, ...) seem to have been replaced by new gray icons that only really work on the black oxygen background. The contrast is very low on my gray Aya background. Also the old colored icons looked much nicer in my opinion (especially kmix). So is there a way to get back the old icon theme? Regards, Lukas

KMail + OpenLDAP

It is possible, but unduly difficult, to use a remote OpenLDAP address book with current (4.4.5) KMail/KAddressBook . A simple search in KAddressBook for a name in the LDAP directory yields nothing. As far as I can see, one has to click on Import from LDAP Server and then give the name in the new window that comes up. I don't see any simple way of transferring the email address given in this way to KMail, except by copy and paste. Incidentally, this is not relevant here but it is even more difficult to use a remote LDAP directory with Windows XP, where is seems necessary to make a change in the Registry. I would have thought a common Address Book for different operation systems would be a common need?

system-settings and logout

Hi All, I was trying to use 4.5 betas and now RC3 from kde-unstable and have a two annoying problems. a) When I change something in system-setting and press the Apply button the whole desktop hangs. I need to restart X and log in again. The changes I made seem to be there after restarting X, though. b) On logout/restart/shutdown the desktop freezes again, there is no indication what is going on. The timer that supposed to show how much time is left stays at 24 seconds. Also pressing the logout/restart/ shutdown button in the middle of the screen give no reaction. However, after waiting about 20 seconds the logout/restart/shutdown will occur. It is just annoying that there is feedback and why do I need to wait for the timeout and why can't I just press the button? Problem a) occurs regardless if desktop effects are on/off. Problem b) only occurs with desktop effects on. Out of curiosity I've tested it with Kubuntu with their 4.5rc2 packages and to my surprise neither of these problems were present with desktop effects on. Does anybody have similar experience, is there a bug report and why does Kubuntu work and Fedora doesn't? Thanks, Robert

KNode on different machines

I've asked this question before, but never got a response as far as I recall: but Is there any simple way of keeping KNode in sync on different machines in different locations? I keep .kde/share/apps/knode/ on a /common folder shared between machines, but this is only half successful. Surely this is a fairly common need?

Beeps from Klipper

Hi, Sometimes--but not always--when I use the mouse to select text in an app such as Konsole, I hear the sound I have configured to play when a Notification (in the KDE System Notifications event source) occurs. I have Klipper running, so I'm wondering if it might be somehow involved in triggering this notification. If so, any idea of how I could prevent the sound from being played without disabling the Notification sound globally? As I mentioned, the beep only occurs on some occasions. Klipper shortcut not working on KDE 4.5rc2

Small query on distribution lists

XSession help needed

My laptop has Intel graphics. I have never been able to use Desktop Effects, and have worked, since I got it a few months ago, in KDE Failsafe mode. After updating this morning I decided to give it another try. In the past I found that I could work for a minute or two, then I would be dropped to the Login screen, so it must be an X failure, I guess. Today, though, I went to SystemSettings to enable a few choice effects - none of the eye-candy stuff, but dimming inactive windows and setting alt-tab to cover switch. I completely lost keyboard input, although the mouse continued to work. Gkrellm showed no activity whatsoever, although I suspect that just means that it had lost connectivity, since mouse movement on the screen must mean that it's not totally dead. I know that .xsession-errors is where I should be looking, but I don't really know where to start, so I've posted it at http://pastebin.ca/1897817. Could someone please have a look and see if there are any suggestions for solving the problem. (I have been working for more than 30 minutes now, without a problem, so I'm hopeful that there is some improvement in the situation since the update.) Hi Fedora 12 x86_64: linux> rpm -qa | grep kdelibs kdelibs-debuginfo-4.4.5-1.fc12.x86_64 kdelibs3-3.5.10-21.fc12.x86_64 kdelibs-4.4.4-1.fc12.x86_64 kdelibs-common-4.4.4-1.fc12.x86_64 So, last nights yum update updated debuginfo packages for kdelibs (and other kde packages) to 4.4.5 without updating the corresponding non-debuginfo package. Presumably my mirror was only partially up to date, but should there not be dependencies to prevent this sort of thing happening? Thanks Roderick

4 questions on KMail/KAddressBook 4.4.4

1. I keep my email on my desktop (my "home server"), running CentOS-5.5 . I run dovecot/IMAP on this desktop, allowing me to access my email on one of several laptops, all running Fedora-13. [I do not normally access email directly on my desktop.] I run an OpenLDAP server on my desktop, with an LDAP address book. I can use this with KMail, in the sense that if I start a "To" line in New Message, possible completions in the LDAP address book are listed. As far as I can tell, this LDAP address book is not copied to my laptop; the information is all stored on the desktop. Is this setup compatible with using KAddressBook-4.4.4 on my laptop? 2. If I go to KMail/KAddressBook on my laptop, I see one contact listed in ~/.kde/share/apps/kabc/ and also in ~/.local/share/contacts/ . However, I do not see any of the (many) contacts in my LDAP address book, although this source is listed in KAddressBook=>Settings=>Configure KAddressBook=>LDAP Server Settings Does KMail access the LDAP server directly? Or must it go through KAddressBook? If the latter, why do I not see these entries in KAddressBook? 3. Must I run mysqld on my laptop for KAddressBook? I'm presently running a MySQL server on my desktop. Can I use this? [I'm not clear what is meant by saying that one must be running MySQL. Does it mean mysql-client or mysqld ?] 4. linewrap with Kompare

Hello, Does anyone know if Kompare can be set to wrap long lines ? I use it to compare diffs of (la)tex files (with kdesvn) where lines are long, and it's very tedious to scroll horizontally just to find one or two words that has been modified. Thanks. AC

Distribution list for KMail/Kontact

I'd like to create (and use) a Distribution List. My setup is slightly complicated, though not I think unusual. I'm actually running IMAP to access email on my server from my laptop. I am running Fedora-13 on my laptop, with kdepim-4.4.4, but am running CentOS-5.5 on my server, with kdepim-3.5.4. I see that in KMail on my laptop, Folder=>Mailing List Management is greyed-out. At the same time, Message=>New Message to Mailing-list is not greyed-out, though clicking on it just seems to bring up the standard New Message window. Is there actually any way of setting up a distribution list within this setup? If not, could I run mailman or a similar distribution list program on my server, given that I am not running a mail server? Hello, Fedora KDE packaging guidelines have evolved over time, but official Fedora cmake guidelines [1] are still the same that were originally accepted in 2007. Those packages didn't pass neither SHARED nor STATIC arguments to add_library() call and relied on the cmake usual default to produce static libraries. Those static libraries weren't meant to be installed; they were just used as "convenience" libraries during the build which would be statically linked into the final executable. However, if BUILD_SHARED_LIBS is defined, we get unversioned shared libraries instead of "convenience" libraries. Packagers often don't know what to do with such unversioned libraries. Perhaps it'd be better to completely remove -DBUILD_SHARED_LIBS:BOOL=ON from the default %cmake macro? I would imagine that most (all?) libraries which are meant to be actually used as shared libraries contain explicit add_library(... SHARED) and set_target_properties(... PROPERTIES VERSION ... SOVERSION ...) calls, but maybe that's not how it is. Any thoughts whether removing BUILD_SHARED_LIBS=ON would break existing packages? Anything else in the guidelines which needs discussion? watch for a window to appear

Hello, there is a java program that gives me a really hard time, it spawns warning messages all the time (making it unusable) I tried to find a way to disable the warning messages but failed, so I am trying to find another way. I want to close the warning window as it is created. I got the window name now all I need is to trigger that "close window" when the window appear. using kde 4.4.4 compiz 0.8.6 any suggestions, tips, are welcome. thanks, YB.

unclear about bug reporting for provisional kde repos

Should bugs be reported for kde-4.4.92 rpms that are provisionally provided by the out-of-fedora kde-unstable repo? Or should one wait for kde-4.5 to enter at least (fedora) updates-testing (since these are most likely kde programming, not fedora packaging, issues)? Eg., since a couple of weeks, wobbly windows no longer wobble; since a couple of weeks, desktop cube no longer works; possibly others...

Hi, My initial tests with KDE-4.4.92 (4.5-RC2) is that it is working very well, a perfect and smooth update. There are some issues from the previous release I need to check and will do so later today. I also decided to give qt-4.7.0-0.26.beta2.fc13 a test and some of the bugs I experienced with the earlier QT beta's have been fixed :) Thanks again to all involved.. Desktop validation testing expansion

Hi, everyone. I'm sending this email to more widely announce something we've been working on for a while. I've spoken to leaders of the XFCE, KDE and LXDE teams about this. We'd like to propose expanding the desktop validation testing that was initiated in the Fedora 13 cycle. During F13, these tests were used to check for blocker bugs only for the GNOME desktop. We did run the tests against some of the other desktops at some checkpoints, but failures from those runs weren't considered as blocking the release. For the Fedora 14 cycle, I'd like to try to run the desktop validation test set - that's the testing documented at https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/QA:Desktop_validation_testing - on all four major desktops at each checkpoint, and consider failures at the relevant level to be release blocking bugs. We've made some adjustments to the test suite already to reflect the input from each SIG, and we may yet work on refining the procedure a little more, but the outline of the plan is simple enough. This would be technically on an experimental basis, as the GNOME testing was during the F13 cycle; if it seems to be causing too much trouble and making it impractical to work to our release plans, we might reconsider the idea during the cycle. But we didn't have to do that for F13, and I'd hope we won't have to for F14 either. The leaders of the various desktop SIGs are fairly confident that their SIGs will be able to contribute in running the tests and fixing blocker issues promptly as they're identified. I think the QA group will also be able to contribute to this process, particularly in carrying out the testing. If anyone from QA or any of the SIGs has comments or concerns on the proposal, please air them now! Basically the state of KMail 2 is not something that can be called "beta", too many problems with it, mainly with migration and filtering, but also some other blocking issues. So the plan we discussed basically is: - The tarball that was created recently and named "beta1" is nowhere near beta1 quality. It is already packaged though, so we can't withdraw it, we only can communicate it correctly to manage expectations - We release a beta version of KDEPIM from the 4.5 branch each time a minor release of KDE SC 4.5.x is done. This means next beta gets released with KDE SC 4.5.0, the one after that with KDE SC 4.5.1 and so on. We release the final version of KDEPIM from the 4.5 branch once we deem it is in a releasable state, at the very least with KDE SC 4.6.0. - The bugfixing work will take place in the 4.5 branch, not trunk. More on that in a separate email. - Trunk is open for all commits again, including new strings and features. People should work on the 4.5 branch as their main branch though, and only commit to trunk in exceptions. Use 4.5 as the main branch to make KDEPIM ready for the release! Exceptions to that being, for example: - Feature merges from e35, e4 and komo - Patches that introduce new features from non-core developers - etc - The Komo branch, where the development for the mobile PIM applications was done, will be merged this or next week to trunk, and then removed. - kdepim and kdepimlibs will depend on kdelibs 4.5.x, _not_ kdelibs trunk. That means no new API from kdelibs trunk may be used. As an exception, the macro KDE_IS_VERSION can be used to conditionally compile in stuff that depends on kdelibs trunk. The RTL patch from Ebrahim comes to my mind here. Note that for now we still depend on kdelibs 4.4, please wait for an announcement from Volker that we can actually depend on kdelibs 4.5. kvkbd too sensitive when pressing a key

Hello, I use kvkbd frequently and ever since I rebooted, kvkbd seems to be very sensitive when pressing a key. For example when I click the letter k, it will print it 4 times. I do not know what changed. Any help would be grateful. kvkbd-0.6-3.fc13.x86_64 Description: Kvkbd is a virtual keyboard for KDE, it contains many feature like system tray and dock support, autodetection and on the fly change of the keyboard layout, scripting with DBus, etc. Kyle

Flashing tile in Task Manager

Hi, I have configured the Task Manager widget in the KDE panel to show only apps for the current desktop, but I've noticed that a flashing tile for an app from another desktop will appear if KDE detects that that app has performed some action such as a screen update. I suppose this can be a useful feature, but in the case of GNU Emacs it's a bit annoying. If I use a keyboard shortcut to jump to a desktop with a GNU Emacs window, it's 100% certain that I'll see a flashing tile for that window if I land in a different desktop. In other words, I don't even need to _do_ anything in Emacs to cause the flashing tile to appear--I just need to visit its desktop via a keystroke. If I want to leave the Emacs desktop without triggering the flashing tile, I have to use the mouse to select a different desktop from the Virtual Desktops widget. Note that this behavior began when I upgraded to KDE 4.4.x. I had no such problem with 4.3.x. Two questions: 1. Is there any way to configure Task Manager to exempt selected apps from the "flashing tile" treatment? Are there any other workarounds that might cut back on this nuisance? 2. Akonadi not starting in 4.5 RC-1

Hi All, In my 4.5 RC-1 (F12) Akonadi is not starting under 'root'. As suggested by Kevin sometimes back (during the days of F10), I have added: user=root in /root/.config/akonadi/mysql-local.conf and /root/.local/share/akonadi/mysql.conf Akonadi is fine under normal user. Hi, I have some problems running palapeli from kde-unstable repository. When I try to open any puzzle (either by creating a new one, or selecting some existing one), it simply segfaults. I'm not sure where I should report bugs in kde-unstable. It does that in a very ugly way -- producing stack trace with about 68 thousand frames. I don't have full -debuginfo for every package, so the stack trace isn't complete, there are some ??'s. The last frame is #0 0xb718b710 in QCommonStyle::sizeFromContents(QStyle::ContentsType, QStyleOption const*, QSize const&, QWidget const*) const () from /usr/lib/libQtGui.so.4 and the only palapeli part in those 68000 lines (except the very beginning) is something like this: (it's moc-generated code, unfortunately) #8 0x08084f10 in Palapeli::View::qt_metacall (this=0x84178a0, _c=QMetaObject::InvokeMetaMethod, _id=35, _a=0xbf800678) at /usr/src/debug/kdegames-4.4.85/i686-redhat-linux-gnu/palapeli/src/view.moc:87 87 _id = QGraphicsView::qt_metacall(_c, _id, _a); I hope that this is reproducible under any conditions with any similar system, so I post only this tiny fraction to make sure that you've reproduced exactly this bug. I can, of course, make full stack trace with all required -debuginfo packages, if that was not the case. It's Fedora 13, qt-4.7.0-0.24.beta1.fc13.i686 (and everything else from kde-unstable, right now). I'm not sure if this is the right place and if this report is of any use. I'm sorry if it is not. KMail hangs

I've got an ongoing problem that I've posted about before. I've recently done some research as to what, *exactly* the problem is. I've narrowed it down somewhat. It appears that Akonadi keeps running because there's some socket/file still active even after shutting down KMail. Quick summary of the problem--- I access my linux box at home from my Windows workstation at the office via SSH and VNC. When I leave for the day, if I close everything down, including the VNC server, KMail hangs when I get back to the local console and attempt to send an email. I checked recently just before leaving the office and found the following file/process still running: john 12234 0.0 0.1 271880 6384 ? S 06:21 0:00 kdeinit4: kio_file [kdeinit] file local:/tmp/ksocket-john/klauncherMT3445.slave-socket local:/tmp/ksocket-john/kmailCP9404.slave-socket Now, I'm no programmer, so I don't know exactly what it means. All I know is that this file/process is still running so Akonadi hangs, or Akonadi hangs so this file/process is still running. Either way, Akonadi is still running when I get home and trying to send an email (everything works fine until I go to send) results in KMail hanging, and I have to manually kill all the KMail related processes from the command line. I would appreciate it if someone could take a look at that. Any suggestions on how to avoid this problem? Perhaps I should switch to Evolution or Thunderbird? I don't really *want* to switch as I have several years' worth of messages tied up in KMail, not to mention I'd have to configure another email client and all the filters, etc. If I could just get this one glitch resolved, it would solve 99.9% of my problems! :-)
