Summary: java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: com.mchange.v2.log.MLog
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=735460
Summary: java.lang.ClassNotFoundException:
com.mchange.v2.log.MLog
Product: Fedora
Version: 15
Platform: Unspecified
OS/Version: Linux
Status: NEW
Severity: high
Priority: unspecified
Component: c3p0
AssignedTo: fedora(a)matbooth.co.uk
ReportedBy: tlestach(a)redhat.com
QAContact: extras-qa(a)fedoraproject.org
CC: fedora(a)matbooth.co.uk,
java-sig-commits(a)lists.fedoraproject.org
Classification: Fedora
Story Points: ---
Type: ---
Description of problem:
According to
http://www.mchange.com/projects/c3p0/index.html#configuring_logging :
com.mchange.v2.log.MLog
Determines which library c3p0 will output log messages to. By default, if log4j
is available, it will use that library, ...
We do not have com.mchange.v2.log.MLog set, and following package versions are
installed:
log4j-1.2.16-7.fc15.noarch
apache-commons-logging-1.1.1-15.fc15.noarch
Hibernate fails to initialize with: java.lang.ClassNotFoundException:
com.mchange.v2.log.MLog
Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
c3p0-0.9.2-0.5.pre1.fc15.noarch
How reproducible:
always on Fedora 15
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Install Spacewalk (https://fedorahosted.org/spacewalk/) on Fedora 15
2. Navigate to Spacewalk WebUI
Actual results:
=====================================
HTTP Status 404 -
type Status report
message
description The requested resource () is not available.
Apache Tomcat/6.0.32
=====================================
This is caused by hibernate initialization failure due to
java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: com.mchange.v2.log.MLog
(java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: com/mchange/v2/log/MLog)
Expected results:
log4j would be used by default causing no exceptions
Additional info:
1)
Seems that replacing the /usr/share/java/c3p0.jar
with
http://mirrors.ibiblio.org/pub/mirrors/maven2/c3p0/c3p0/0.9.0.2/c3p0-0.9....
resolves the problem
2)
Until now we used
http://mirrors.dotsrc.org/jpackage/5.0/generic/free/RPMS/c3p0-0.9.1.2-2.j...
without any issues. Now the Fedora 15 c3p0 version has higher version and gets
installed instead of the jpackage version.
2)
Looking at:
# rpm -q c3p0
c3p0-0.9.2-0.5.pre1.fc15.noarch
# rpm -ql c3p0
/etc/maven/fragments/c3p0
/usr/share/doc/c3p0-0.9.2
/usr/share/doc/c3p0-0.9.2/CHANGELOG
/usr/share/doc/c3p0-0.9.2/LICENSE
/usr/share/doc/c3p0-0.9.2/RELEASE_NOTES-c3p0-0.9.2-pre1
/usr/share/doc/c3p0-0.9.2/index.html
/usr/share/java/c3p0.jar
/usr/share/maven2/poms/JPP-c3p0.pom
it seems that c3p0 isn't correctly packaged.
I would expect /usr/share/java/c3p0.jar to be a symlink to
/usr/share/java/c3p0-0.9.0.2.jar
3)
Due to this bug, Spacewalk on Fedora 15 is unusable. Please, check it.

tycho-0.10.0-3.fc16.src.rpm Failed To Build From Source against the rawhide
tree. See http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/FTBFS for more information.
If you believe this is actually a bug in another package, do NOT change the
component in this bug or close this bug. Instead, add the appropriate bug
number from the other package to the "Depends on" line in this bug. If the
other package does not yet have a bug created that you think matches, please
create one. Doing so helps us properly track bugs and their dependencies, just
as we track package dependencies. (If you close this bug, and the other
package is not fixed before the next FTBFS run, a new bug will get created.
Please follow the above advice to avoid such duplication.)

Currently our resolver ignores versions completely and returns unversioned jar
all the time.
The change should make it possible to differentiate. So when package A requests
gid:aid:version but we don't have that same exact version installed it will
return unversioned jar as before.
If however, package B_v2 provides gid:aid:version requested by package A our
resolver should prefer jar from this rpm to default unversioned one.
This feature will probably require change to %add_maven_depmap macro as well

Created attachment 542672
--> https://bugzilla.redhat.com/attachment.cgi?id=542672
Proof of concept patches.
Currently, systemd starts tomcat as using the unprivileged account 'tomcat' for
security reasons. This has the side effect of not being able to run tomcat on
privileged ports.
There are two workarounds for this: 1) use iptables to forward port 80 traffic
to port 8080, or 2) use mod_proxy on apache.
A third workaround is to use jsvc to start tomcat as root and then drop
privileges once tomcat has bound to the ports. However, this option is not
supported out-of-the-box.
My attached patches to /usr/sbin/tomcat-sysd and /usr/sbin/tomcat change this
so that the third workaround is supported out-of-the-box. It uses systemd to
start and stop jsvc, which in turn controls tomcat. These patches were tested
successfully on my own system.
Unfortunately, I do not believe these patches are of production quality. I
consider them more to be proof-of-concept code. In addition to the cleanliness
of the code, I have two concerns: 1) my code automatically chooses jsvc when
present; for production, you may want to make it an option in
/etc/sysconfig/tomcat instead, and 2) I'm not sure my patches correctly handle
the pidfile and logging files under jsvc.
I hope, however, that my patches will kickstart the development process. I
believe supporting this third workaround would be a real benefit to RedHat and
Fedora.

Hamcrest in Fedora is currently version 1.1, which was released in 2007.
Hamcrest 1.2 was released in 2009, and there were release candidates for 1.3 in
2010. I don't know about the stability of 1.3, so I'm not sure whether 1.2 or
1.3 is a better choice. Please update this package.
