j-Interop: Open Source , Non Native access to DCOM
by Vikram Roopchand
For anyone interested:
j-Interop implements DCOM wire protocol (MSRPC) to enable development of Pure Bi-Directional, Non-Native Java applications which can interoperate with any COM component. The implementation itself is purely in Java and does not use JNI to provide native access, thus being truly platform independent. It has full support for COM automation and supports callback from COM Servers (event handling).
1.04(a) has been tested on Fedora 5 and Windows XP/2K/2K3. Beta is expected out by second week of september.
This release can be downloaded from http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=174727
Thanks,
best regards,
Vikram

libgcjwebplugin.so security README
by Thomas Fitzsimmons
Hi Jakub,
Mark Cox asked me to write a README about the security risks of using
gcjwebplugin, for inclusion in the libgcj RPM. Can you include this in
Rawhide gcc's doc directory?
I also realized that gappletviewer wasn't warning people that it runs
without a security manager, so I wrote a patch that issues a warning on
startup and asks the user if they want to continue. Can it be applied
to the Rawhide gcc rpm?
Tom, if we do go with the separate libgcj rpm, these will need to be
applied there.

packaging freemind, anyone interested?
by Till Maas
Hiyas,
I want to ask if anyone here is interested in packaging freemind
(http://freemind.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php/Main_Page). I do not know
whether or not it does run with fedora's free java but I am missing it from
the time before I used fedora. This is why I want to ask if anyone here would
be so kind and package it for fedora. It is a free mind-mapping software that
in my eyes is the best free mind-mapping software currently available.
Regards,
Till

java-1.4.2-gcj-compat-plugin commented out
by Thomas Fitzsimmons
Hi,
the java-1.4.2-gcj-compat-plugin package was a good preview of things to come
for FC6test2, but GNU Classpath's security implementation is still too immature
for the plugin to be loaded by Firefox by default. See:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=204728
I've commented out java-1.4.2-gcj-compat-plugin from java-1.4.2-gcj-compat, and
made the latest java-1.4.2-gcj-compat obsolete java-1.4.2-gcj-compat-plugin <=
1.4.2.0-40jpp.104, so the plugin will not be loaded by Firefox by default.
java-1.4.2-gcj-compat-plugin installed a symlink from
/usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/libjavaplugin.so to
/usr/lib/gcj-4.1.1/libgcjwebplugin.so. The latter is owned by the libgcj RPM.
My plan was to continue to install /usr/lib/gcj-4.1.1/libgcjwebplugin.so
(without installing any symlinks, so that Firefox would not load the plugin by
default), so that adventurous users could still do:
cd ~/.mozilla/plugins
ln -s /usr/lib/gcj-4.1.1/libgcjwebplugin.so .
There would still be the security warning dialog asking whether or not to load a
given applet.
What do people think of this plan?
