Hi all translators,
With all suggestions/ideas/info posted by all of you, I had first meetup with zanata team to draft a plan to start with. I like to share the news I got from zanata team here. I will update the plan page with the following information later tomorrow. The move will occur in parallel as suggested. The communication channels with zanata team are zanata-users ML [1] and #zanata channel on freenode. Due to the limited capacity/resource of zanata team, posting to ML would be appreciated than pinging on irc. I thank you so much to Zanata team!
Stage 0 - Establish Test Instance on Openshift Available at: localized-zanatatest.itos.redhat.com Period: 4 weeks * This is trial run. Log in with FAS account and create new zanata account, and play. It is important to be loud and file a bug for any request [1]. Please make sure to append "[Fedora]" at the beginning of the subject. This will give a bug priority ;p E.g. [Fedora] Organization feature is needed.
Stage 1 - Establish fedora.zanata.org (FAS only instance) Available at: TBA Period: n/a * This will contain only essential items, no history is imported. First every language coordinator needs to create new account and become your team coordinator. And then the coordinators will help and approve other translators to join. Note, there is no auto or transparent migration.
Stage 2 - Import history and Add features requested Available at: TBA Period: n/a * History (such as reviewed marks, notification, translator credit per msg) and any additional feature requested (and approved) will be migrated. It is essential to evaluate and decide what level of history to be imported (or may be given up).

Hi Noriko, Hi all,
I am just courious if it means that users/translators that already have a zanata (FAS) account for translate.zanata.org will have to create another zanata account for fedora.zanata.org? I would obviously prefer if the former could be re-used for the fedora zanata instance.
Thank you for providing any info, sooner or later.

Thanks for asking! Yes, we will have to create new account, and can use exact same username.
In translate.zanata.org, non-Fedora translators reside. There is no Organization feature in zanata yet, and it is hard to separate non-Fedora and fedora users completely on same instance atm. We can not force our own rule there. In order to keep and maintain our team structure (or user structure) such as names, coordinators and rules of approval, having separate instance is simple and clear. As the instance will be newly created, same username can be used. Eventually all Fedora packages will move to fedora.zanata.org. Zanata team, pls correct me if I am misunderstanding.

Just curious, should we ask the Zanata dev to integrate OpenID login? That would allow us to log-in with our Fedora credentials.

In fact, Zanata does use OpenID to allow Fedora authentication (click the Fedora option on the Log In screen). OpenID authentication is enabled on https://translate.zanata.org/ and on the demo server at https://localized-zanatatest.itos.redhat.com/
We're also adding an option to configure a server so that it only allows Fedora authentication, which we plan to use for fedora.zanata.org.

Hi Marcelo,
Currently only users with administrator privileges on the instance can do that. I reckon the Fedora community should nominate a few administrators for this instance that will be able to take care of these tasks.
In the meanwhile, if you hit the "Help" link on the top bar, there is a "Contact Administrator" button to send a message to all instance administrators and the request to add languages could be sent there.

I am just courious if it means that users/translators that already have a zanata (FAS) account for translate.zanata.org will have to create another zanata account for fedora.zanata.org ? I would obviously prefer if the former could be re-used for the fedora zanata instance. Thank you for providing any info, sooner or later.
Thanks for asking! Yes, we will have to create new account, and can use exact same username.
We're also adding an option to configure a server so that it only allows Fedora authentication, which we plan to use for fedora.zanata.org .
Awesome :)

Hi Marcelo,
Can you access this page https://translate.zanata.org/zanata/webtrans/Application.seam?project=zanata... ? I can't see any problem in turns of your permission or project settings that will prevent you from accessing it. Are you having problem finding your way there?
To access or translate that project in pt-BR, first go to the project "zanata-server", then click on version "master". There are 87 languages listed under Languages tab. You can click on the the pager at the bottom of the list to navigate to pt-BR or you can type it in the search right under Language tab heading. Once you see language pt-BR, click on it the right hand side will display document list of this project version. Click on any document (in this case just one) will open the translation editor as above linked.
Let us know if you have any further problems.

Yes, the teams are different btw translate.zanata and fedora.zanata. And this is one of major reason to have separate instance.
'translate.zanata' instance is used by various projects including non-fedora projects. But Zanata has no Organization feature yet like Transifex (see the string 'organization/fedora/' in TX url [2]), and it allows only one team per language, aka one pt-BR team within the instance. So it is still possible that a translator exists who does not belong to Fedora L10n team but translate non-fedora project which s/he has interests. There is no way to control or group users to reflect the users structure in wiki [1].
Atm separate instance, fedora.zanata, is best option for us. So that it allows us to organize users structure which can be synchronized with our wiki team [1]. Additionally, this instance will be set FAS login only, therefore non-fedora translator (user with no FAS account) is unable to login.

Noriko,
Thank you for feedback. A sugestion is each project has your instance, with this we can give greater independence for every project and it would be nice ZA keeping your DEMO instance as well as the translation of its components (GUI, CLI, etc..). After translating the Zanata project server to the pt-BR would like to do a post showing how to install ZA to your open source project.

Hi Dimitris
No, plan atm. Other than zanata and translatewiki, no alternate has been named on the MLs so far, while I see there are a number of people supporting Zanata.
In terms of resource availability, Zanata team comes up and offers full support on this move. There is no allocatable resource for FLP on Inra team for a while. I understand it is good, but I can't see any other people/resource available for evaluating Pootle or for researching other alternatives, unfortunately.

Noriko, all,
I want to bring this issue up once again. I am quite worried for a number of things in this migration project:
- The migration project is not approached in a technical way and the preparation is all but thorough. Most specifically, we have not evaluated Pootle, which is by far the most popular and well maintained open-source L10n platform. We have not reached out to their team to see if they're willing to help us with the move. - We have not compared Zanata with Transifex on a feature-by-feature basis to see if there are key features missing and ask whether the Zanata team wants to implement them. - We haven't done any research on what this will cost to Fedora. How is this going to affect our developers and translators? What are the success metrics? - We have not really talked to our developers maintaining their software on Transifex today to get their feedback on the move. Unless they move everything over, and change their integration scripts, this migration will fail. - At which point we'll decide whether to go forward or not? Finally, we haven't even met together as an L10n group with Infrastructure for an IRC meeting before going forward.

Hi Dimitris, glad to hear from you!

Most specifically, we have not evaluated Pootle, which is by far the most popular and well maintained open-source L10n platform. We have not reached out to their team to see if they're willing to help us with the move.
If you can reach them and find a possibility that they can support us, it would be best and we can compare with Zanata. However considering all the resource currently Zanata team is providing to FLP, it does not sound realistic to me that Pootle team can provide same amount of time and resource.
- We have not compared Zanata with Transifex on a feature-by-feature basis to see if there are key features missing and ask whether the Zanata team wants to implement them.
I see this is minor concern with two facts. One, I have been asking all translators to file a bug as RFE. So far there are a few bugs filed and none of them is refused or closed as not fixed, but those are addressed in a proactive way. Two, We have already been using Zanata with some projects, and I have not heard serious complain.
- We haven't done any research on what this will cost to Fedora. How is this going to affect our developers and translators? What are the success metrics?
Sorry I am not sure what is referred as cost here. For translators, we will be able to have ONE interface to deal with all (well, prob most of all) packages and documentations for Fedora without going back and force btw two interfaces. I see this is success.
- We have not really talked to our developers maintaining their software on Transifex today to get their feedback on the move. Unless they move everything over, and change their integration scripts, this migration will fail.
I have added myself in admin list of trans at lists, so that will be able to respond them quicker in the future.
- At which point we'll decide whether to go forward or not? Finally, we haven't even met together as an L10n group with Infrastructure for an IRC meeting before going forward.
Thanks for pointing this out! Probably, at the end of Stage0 (testing period), we should be able to decide. Due to my limited knowledge, I'm not sure what kind of information to give out to Infrastructure team, what topic/issue to discuss with. Could you give me a hand here?
Many thanks
noriko
