I wonder why they're working on the 1.7 branch already since 1.5.8 is
the newest version. I'd say work on the 1.6 code. When is 1.7 set to
be made available?
The main reason is that 1.6 is already stabilizing, Moin won't accept a lot of
new changes anymore. So if I did my work on 1.6, it would probably never go
into mainline (unless ported to 1.7) and Fedora would have to run a branch of
the code. 1.7 is also the version that the Moin GSoC students are working on.

According to what I've heard, 1.7 would be available "this year", nothing

specific.
