Moving Taskotron to Production

Now that Taskotron staging is up and running, I'm not sure what's generally required for services before moving to production. I'm still working out a few kinks in the initial production systems but I think that the only big thing left is the proxy settings, which I'm leaving alone for the moment. Is there any review process or checklist for moving things from stg to prod? Tim

I will update the plan page with the following information later tomorrow. The move will occur in parallel as suggested. Due to the limited capacity/resource of zanata team, posting to ML would be appreciated than pinging on irc. I thank you so much to Zanata team! Stage 0 - Establish Test Instance on Openshift Available at: localized-zanatatest.itos.redhat.com Period: 4 weeks * This is trial run. Log in with FAS account and create new zanata account, and play. It is important to be loud and file a bug for any request [1]. Please make sure to append "[Fedora]" at the beginning of the subject. This will give a bug priority ;p E.g. [Fedora] Organization feature is needed. Stage 1 - Establish fedora.zanata.org (FAS only instance) Available at: TBA Period: n/a * This will contain only essential items, no history is imported. First every language coordinator needs to create new account and become your team coordinator. And then the coordinators will help and approve other translators to join. Note, there is no auto or transparent migration. Hey people! Apparently the two newly-rebuilt-on-RHEL7 mailman servers are not on the VPN, so collab03 can't forward web requests to them. Could someone fix that please (or show me how to do it)? Thanks! Aurélien

Ask Fedora being badgered by spam

Hi, Of late, Ask Fedora is being badgered by spam. They seem to open multiple accounts and post as many as 50 spam questions at a time. Is there something we can do to tackle this? For the time being, we're manually blocking the user and deleting each question one by one. It's a lot of work and one needs to keep an eye out on the forum all the time. I've asked upstream a question here: http://askbot.org/en/question/12506/how-do-i-mass-delete-all-questions-from… This is a work around to clean up the mess. Can we do something to avoid it altogether? New OpenStack instance

This is mostly for Kevin and Stephen. Stephen provisioned fed-cloud09.cloud.fedoraproject.org to RHEL7. I installed there new OpenStack instance using [1]. I make git-clone and files are in: /root/openstack-ansible-install I modified var/* to match IP and generated new passwords. It would be nice if somebody can put content of var/os.yml in private.git, but I would rather not put it in {{ private }}/vars.yml so we do not get collisions, and rather to put it in: {{ private }}/vars_os.yml or similar. Additionally I removed VG vg_guest and created VG 'cinder-volumes', because that is what packstack expect. Is setup of fed-cloud09 already in some playbook? If yes, it need to be changed. Dashboard is available at: http://209.132.184.9/dashboard/ Right now it is just http, If we want https (would be nice) then I would need pem encode cert and key (without passphrase). Modify CONFIG_HORIZON_SSL=n CONFIG_SSL_CERT= CONFIG_SSL_KEY= in /root/openstack-ansible-install/files/packstack-controller-answers.txt and rerun playbook: ansible-playbook -i localhost, controller.yml I will try to add to controller.yml other tasks to re-create flavours, common images (F20,19 etc..). If you want to add there something, you are welcome. It is still git, so please commit before you finish. At the end I want to copy resulting playbook to lockbox. BTW: If you add some task (eg. those flavour etc.) I recommend to temporary comment out line: - command: packstack --answer-file=/root/packstack-controller-answers.txt as this step take huge amount of time (up to 10-20 minutes). This is a status report for July 21 to July 27. Apologies for being a day late. Never pressed "send" yesterday. # Summary - Cut a couple new Fedimg PyPI releases. - Got a idea of where we stand with atomic/ostree images thanks to various meetings. Glad to have scheduled a regular weekly atomic meeting. - Only a couple things left to debug with the python-fedimg RPM. Wish it was chugging along in staging by now, but I've been tackling other things. - Talked a bit about MirrorManager and MM2, and what fixes we need for atomic images. - TONS of stuff cleared off my plate for my move to Seattle. Got a swell apartment, application accepted, did budgeting and legal stuff... - A bunch of stuff for hopping on Red Hat full time, including orientation, documentation, and the trip to Flock. First day was yesterday (July 28)! # Timesheet I started using Taskwarrior again at some point on Monday. Attached is a timesheet in HTML. Gotta work on including pretty colours. I was pretty good about logging things, but I'll improve this week. I've used modified scripts of Ralph's to generate the sheet. I plan to have the it hosted on the web by next week, also hopefully auto-updating. Until next time! -- David

I need to change up a few things. not yet looked at doing it for rawhide/branched yet Are there any blockers to setting up the rawhide/branched parts? Anything I can help with? In particular, will these composes write trees to the mirrors? If we're only doing a tree compose for TC, things are highly likely not to work because it'll be the first time we've run it in prod. What I'm thinking about for a plan is: Dennis (and any help he needs) work on the mainline rel-eng thread for F21. In the meantime though, Atomic still needs a mechanism to *try* code that's in development. So I may look at having the internal compose server be a "pull from COPR" type thing and thus be a remix (again), but improve on the current situation by mirroring to dl.fp.org or so.

ask fedora -- closing questions because they're answered?

I'm asking this here for lack of a "meta" site for Ask Fedora. :) I recently came across this: https://ask.fedoraproject.org/en/question/50626/when-will-dnf-fully-be-port… I'm a bit perplexed by the close reason -- "the question is answered, right answer was accepted". Whatever the reason, this shows up in the list of questions with [closed] by the title (in addition to the green checkmark indicating that an answer was accepted). Why would we want to do this? Isn't the point to build up a body of questions and answers? I think closing should be reserved for _problematic_ questions -- off topic, spam, argumentative, etc. But maybe I'm not getting something here. Atomic status

Hi, I feel like things aren't moving forward quickly enough with Atomic, both on the Docker base image side and the rpm-ostree host side. A lot of that is to be expected - we're trying to introduce *two* new ways to deliver software beyond RPMs at the same time. It's quite nontrivial. There's also: 1) We're trying to do new projects, but we haven't added significant human resources 2) This is also the first Fedora.next release 3) We don't know how popular the whole Atomic/Docker model will be until we do a stable release really, but it's hard to get current Infrastructure people to spend time on it without knowing how valuable it is... Let's look at blocking issues for Atomic in Fedora: - Having rpm-ostree be run as part of nightly compose - Content mirroring * Server with SSL, some level of redundancy * Open question around how often/when composes are done, and how much history is retained - GPG signing - Method of having Koji/ImageFactory pull mirrored OSTree repository content to compose ISOs - MirrorManager integration (no code written on ostree side yet) To the best of my knowledge, code exists for all of the above except the last, and the last bit is hard to write without having a deployment of MirrorManager using it, which depends I see two solution paths: - Double down and fix the above, continue trying to sync Atomic with Fedora * Have more time from current Infra people on above * Have me/other members of my team join infra * Mix of both? - Have Atomic be a Remix, partially in infra, partially outside - Have custom GPG key - Continue doing composes on the atomic01.qa.fedoraproject.org machine - Mirror to something like Amazon CloudFront (would require external sponsorship from Red Hat) Would more regular meetings help?

I used to be a member of the Fedora Board in the past. I see there's still the title "Fedora Localization Lead" next to my name, but I suppose that's mostly because no one else took the role. Today I basically make sure the community has what they need from Transifex. I trust Piotr Drąg (raven) for any L10n leadership questions I have. Today a decision is being brewed on the basis that Transifex is not open-source. As I mentioned, this is a discussion which needed to happen. But I find the way it's being discussed disappointing to all the years of hard work many individuals have put to establish a successful L10n platform for Fedora (including my own). Many people in Fedora (and Transifex) have *invested man years to make this work*. We haven't even discussed "what are the key things we need from our L10n platform"? Following are my thoughts. I'm writing these with an effort to wear my Fedora L10n hat as much as possible. But the POV does also include my roles as Transifex's CEO, Fedora's Localization Infrastructure Lead for the past 6 years, and as one of the most experienced people on open-source localization. *ON FREEDOM* When I was young I was looking at freedom in a different way. I was more an open source zealot than today. I cared mostly about openness of the code. It didn't matter if there was only one engineer hacking on the code. What mattered was the license and little more. Gradually I started realizing one of the reasons I loved Fedora was that it valued highly quality and community participation. It valued relationships, productivity, happiness, innovation. We valued meritocracy more than democracy. Succeeding as a distributions was more than just having the sources of packages. *I'm not a fan of the spin put on Freedom in this discussion*. Fedora is free to use Transifex forever. It's free to export all data at any point (including all past translations and all the history of the translations so far) to move to another platform. And it was free to use real people from our team working on improving the platform constantly and adding new features. I've met a lot of people in Fedora. The smartest ones knew very well that *Freedom is not a one-colored attribute*. *MIGRATING* Migrating from one platform to another will have *major costs*. I led the original migration from Elvis <http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Archive:L10N/Tools/Plans> to Tx. It required many meetings with stakeholders, research, experiments. In the end, *it costed us more than half our translators*. Assuming the Freedom discussion is resolved and the benefits of the migration outweigh the costs. If I were leading this (and did not have a vested interest in one platform...), the last thing I'd want, is to go through the trouble of migrating, only to find out 5 key things we need are missing. *Zero research was done* on the available tools out there and how they stack with Transifex. Here are examples of research done by other projects which came across my attention: One <http://www.worddelights.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/developer-side-compa…> , Two <https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0Aqevw3Q-ErDUdFgzT3VNVXQxd095bF…> . Ask the Transifex team itself to tell us how they compare to the other platforms on all key areas. Cover solutions like Pootle which are developed in a very open matter. Put in a spreadsheet and compare thoroughly. This is responsible project management 101. *ZANATA* Those who have been around a while saw the Zanata push from the Red Hat teams coming with mathematical precision. Even when Transifex was being fully developed as open source, Red Hat decided to develop Zanata in parallel instead of investing in Transifex. This has always struck me as mind-boggling, given that Transifex was born in Fedora's arms and quickly became the most popular open-source localization platform. It is all in good spirit and competition is good. I am holding no grudge against Zanata. In fact, the Zanata team's efforts to grab Fedora in the past has pushed Tx to innovate fast. Having said this... In terms of Freedom, out of all the localization platforms out there, and given what I've seen the past years, Zanata is developed in one of the least open ways. Which open-source projects are using Zanata? On zanata.org I can see a bunch of test projects, a few Red Hat documentation ones and JBoss <https://translate.jboss.org/> (also Red Hat's). Which other projects have installed their own Zanata server and how many words are they translating? *Pootle is a much more openly developed and widely accepted platform*. The leads (Dwayne and Friedel) are true open-sourcers, their team is presenting in many major open-source conferences, they're trusted by many large open-source projects <http://translate.sourceforge.net/wiki/pootle/live_servers> (Mozilla, Open Office), proprietary ones (Evernote, Grooveshark, Rdio) and their feature list <http://pootle.translatehouse.org/discover.html> is amazing. At FOSDEM I'll go out for drinks with Friedel. When there are tools like Pootle out there, why on Earth would Fedora even consider Zanata? *Where is the research and comparison between the options we have?* *TRANSIFEX* Transifex has 20+ people working full-time on the platform. A big chunk of our time is invested on open-source, community projects <https://www.transifex.com/customers/open-source/>. There are projects on Tx with as many as 1 Billion words being translated by 14.000 people. Joomla <https://www.dropbox.com/s/tnaypyaylxnausr/Screenshot%202014-07-17%2013.11.5…> has 2.7K translators contributing on 250 projects. If the goal is to have a *vibrant and successful Fedora Localization Project*, then there are so many things to be done which make the "which tool" discussion, quite frankly, stupid. Here are a couple: - Use Transifex's Reports <https://www.dropbox.com/s/o4htl010ieo38iw/Screenshot%202014-07-17%2012.40.1…> to constantly recognize our most active translators. Send them a t-shirt or even simply mention them in the release notes. - Nurture teams <https://www.dropbox.com/s/3dtubts36oxhk1q/Screenshot%202014-07-17%2012.46.3…> by identifying inactive members and refreshing them. - Help community members prioritize <https://www.dropbox.com/s/5xbmbc2m1elmcva/Screenshot%202014-07-17%2012.49.2…> which projects to translate first and remove old content. Do we want a successful community L10n project? These are the things we should be discussing. And these are some of the things the Transifex team is investing on. "What does the roadmap look like" is a key question for the research on which tool to choose (which never happened). *ENDING THOUGHTS* As a Fedora contributor, I'm expecting a discussion for such an important topic to have higher responsibility than the one I've seen so far. mirroring for alternative content

Hi, We have several forms of non-Koji internal builds: 1) COPR (the most visible) 2) http://alt.fedoraproject.org/pub/alt/rawhide-kernel-nodebug/ (this could be a COPR) 3) rpm-ostree: http://rpm-ostree.cloud.fedoraproject.org/#/ Now, I recently was allocated a new atomic01.qa.fedoraproject.org server dedicated to rpm-ostree composes, and I'm happy to announce I now have it composing trees: fedora-atomic/rawhide/x86_64/server/docker-host => 175510ab77ef39ec6000db2745c70444d55957e38c5ff28f890237e1f012ea5e fedora-atomic/rawhide/x86_64/workstation/gnome/core => b6f3f3b53ef957c71e8d8bdc36c35519888d4177bf6a582ba37e33416ff84216 But it's on the QA network, and so I can't just serve the content directly from it. Nor would I want to have the compose server doing double duty as a static webserver anyways. I could just rsync this content to the current rpm-ostree.cloud.fedoraproject.org, but there are a few issues with that: 1) It's a one off instance in the fedora cloud with no backup/monitoring 2) No redundancy 3) No tuning for static webserving 4) Most critically, no TLS COPR only relatively recently gained TLS, which is fundamentally necessary for retrieving arbitrary executable code that runs as root. But COPR also (from what I understand from <puiterwijk>) is just one machine. What do you think about investing in having e.g. altcdn.fedoraproject.org be a load-balanced static webserver farm protected by TLS that could be written to by a trusted subset of non-Koji build/compose tooling? "altcdn" is the first thing that came to mind offhand for a name, feel free to pick others =) We'd need to determine the writing process; could be rsync-over-ssh access to specific subdirectories gated by ssh key? Something else?

As a mentor I'd feel bad telling people about Fedora's values and knowing at the same time the Project itself is not consistent with exactly these values. It's the same discussion we had for 3d party repositories, but we should focus on this single topic. Zanata actually is an alternative, probably not on the same level as TX, but anyway, I'd feel better using Zanata knowing we are respecting or 4 foundations, than staying on a proprietary tool. [pkgdb2] Group Maintainership - Ready to test?

Dear all, I have just put in pkgdb2's git what I believe is the current final touch to allow testing group maintainership in pkgdb2. Basically, pkgdb2 will now ask you upon log-in if you are: in one of the admin groups, a packager, in a group that is currently maintaining one or more packages in the database. I also created an `infra-sig` group in FAS with the type: pkgdb, the two requirements enforced by pkgdb2 are: - the group should be of type pkgdb - the group should end with `-sig` So I would like to ask who has some time to start looking at this, maybe early next week? On the pkgdb side, unless we want to change some things, I think it will be alright (and if not, I'll adjust), but I think we still need to adjust our scripts syncing ACLs to git and bugzilla or at least test them. We'll also probably want to see how bodhi reacts and if it allows a packager to create a package because the packager is in the appropriate FAS group. Hi, Over the past few days, I've come across two questions where the asker was on rawhide. While I'd like to help these people, rawhide is way too quick and sometimes way too buggy - Ask Fedora is probably not the best place for these questions just like #fedora isn't - the Q&A mailing list is. FYI, note on sudo

Greetings. Thanks to some detective work from Siddhesh Poyarekar (a glibc maintainer) and then fas work from Xavier LAMIEN, we have now fixed the long standing anoying bug with fas enabled machines where users wouldn't get all their shell groups on login. This means you no longer need to run 'newgrp' before sudo, it should just work (provided you are in a group that is allowed to sudo on that host). Thanks again everyone involved. Has it helped you decide any area you wish to focus on or contribute to more? 3. Dear infrastructure devs, My name is Michel Alexandre Salim (IRC handle: michel_slm); I've been a longtime contributor on the packaging side, and was previously involved tangentially with the sysadmin-darkserver FIG when Kushal and I were exploring a potential rewrite that ended up not take place. I'm currently in charge of system administration for a local ISP (cergis.net.id), and had a similar responsibility at my previous job for an Indonesian hospital group; and am versed in the tools that this team uses: - Linux - Fedora/CentOS (Debian too but that's not relevant) - Python - Django - SQL - MySQL, PostgreSQL, Oracle - Ansible I'm looking at the list of outstanding issues now -- I'll perhaps ask at the next meeting which of the non-sensitive issues could use some help at the moment. Following up on Atomic in Fedora infrastructure

For https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Changes/Atomic_Cloud_Image I was talking with Dennis Gilmore about some of what we would need to do in order to have Atomic be more closely integrated into the mainline infrastructure. >From memory, some action items: * Define repodata.xml or similar to enable mirroring, add mirrorlist support [walters] * Start doing tree composes in daily compose runs [dgilmore] * Move fedora-atomic git repository into fedorahosted [walters] * Determine how Anaconda-in-Koji can pull tree content [?] Also, I need to followup to Kevin on the mirroring, which is related to the last item. Dennis, can you post the picture you took of the whiteboard?
