Hi all,
It's that time of the year when we all come together and help all the
humans to get rid off the proprietary software, yes my friends it's
time for mukt.in.
We feel great pleasure to present you mukt.in 2010. This time with a
totally new concept and a new home. Previous editions have
successfully inspired a lot of people, specially in Hyderabad about
free software and brought them to the community. But due to the active
Telangana issue this year, so we are not able to have it in Hyderabad
this time.
So, we have shifted base to Jaipur, Rajasthan. This time we are not
accepting any talks , yes that's true. Mukt.in 2010 is going to be
completely workshop based. It's our belief that hands on tutorial have
a greater and better impact on the ones attending then only talking,
and looking at the fact, most people attending it would be students
from and around jaipur, because jaipur is a hub for engineering
colleges.
The mukt.in team invites submissions to its official un-conference ,
mukt.in 2010 to be held on 23rd and 24th April 2010 at Swami
Keshvanand Institute of Technology (SKIT), Jaipur, Rajasthan. We
cordially invite you to submit your CFP at http://mukt.in/cfp now.
Important Dates and Time
The last date for CFP submission is 8th April 2010. On 8th april 1200
hrs IST we will be closing the CFP window. List of selected workshops
will be announced on 10th April 2010 at 0000 hrs IST
Workshop submission Guidelines:
1. Interested speakers need to register on http://mukt.in
2. They will have to add a workshop using the system
3. In the add workshop system they need to mention following:
a) Title of the workshop
b) A detail description what they plan to do in the workshop
c) Duration of the workshop
d) Expertise level
e) Required software to be used during the workshop
f) Linux distribution they plan to use (Fedora / Ubuntu we are
currently supporting)
g) Any other extra material if you want to attach
One can submit more than 1 workshop using the system. It will be
really great if you plan to submit more than 1 workshop as it will
give you ample opportunity to start from the basics and go till the
advance.
Mukt.in 2010 theme and suggested area for workshops
As said earlier this time we are only planning to have workshops so,
we like to introduce the attendees to the concept of "shut-up and
hack". Our target audience will mostly be college students who will
have a beginner to intermediate expertise in FOSS. Plus we are also
planning to bring Rajasthan government officials / NGOs and also
college faculties. We plan to organize a complete workshop dedicated
to NGOs, government people and college faculties. The workshop for
college faculty should preferably target FOSS tools which the
faculties can use as an alternative to the existing proprietary tools.
Some of the suggested topics for workshops are:
* LAMP.
* FOSS and electronics.
* Linux system administration.
* FOSS in mobile computing.
* Cloud computing with FOSS.
* Emerging open standards.
* FOSS and multimedia.
* and much more.
For any further queries please write to us at:

Thanks & Regards
Mukt.in 2010 Team

Proposal: Fedora Activity Day (FAD) on May 2010
by Rahul Sundaram
Hi
For those who haven't seen the logs about the planning for FUDCon India,
I recommend reading them at
http://lists.fedoraproject.org/pipermail/india/2010-March/003169.html
The gist of it in my understanding is that, we are likely to have FUDCon
in India next year and instead have a FAD or a series of them depending
on budget and opportunities this year. FAD is focussed on pulling in
together existing contributors to get some work and FUDCon has a larger
agenda and budget requirements so it helps to plan in advance. I would
like to propose that we have a FAD on first or second week of May, the
weekends are good and we can host it in Red Hat office in Pune. The
dates are either, 8 and 9th or 15th and 16th of May 2010. Reusing
the agenda we planned for FUDCon, I see the following as what we can
accomplish:
Fedora Tour - Ankur Sinha
Website improvements - Hiemanshu
Dorrie - Shreyank Gupta
Fedora ARM ? The Marvel team who does the ARM porting is in Pune
Susmit - Are you going to be in India in May?
I think we can sponsor travel and accommodation for *existing
contributors* who want to attend and *get specific work done*. If
these dates are not good for any of the contributors here or if anyone
else wants to join or have questions, please let me know here or
offlist. Thanks
Rahul

OSSCamp Chandigarh
by Kishore Bhargava
Apparently there is an OSSCamp being organised in Chandigarh on April
10, 2010. While I will not be able to attend, the folks there seem to be
hitting me for Fedora goodies. If some kind soul (Sankarshan) can put
together a kit for OSSCamp, I'll make sure they get it and distribute it
there.
One of the reasons, I will not be attending, is I have been called to
speak at Guru Nanak Dev Engg. College, Ludhiana on the 9th. If I had a
bunch of Fedora goodies, I could spread the love there as well.
Of course, if there are Fedora ambassadors in either city, please get in
touch with me, I'll put you in direct contact with both institutions.
TIA.
Cheers...Kishore

Fedora Goodies/DVDs for OSSCamp Chandigarh April 2010
by Rishabh Verma
OSSCamps the are India's biggest community on open source and every few
months we organize some of India's premier technology events - OSSCamp Open
Source* Unconferences.* These events bring together developers, designers,
engineers and students together to discuss and experience the latest in open
source technology. The community is a 1200 member strong and average
participation at these camps is over 150 participants.
We are organizing the next camp at Chandigarh on April 10, 2010. *We are
looking for some fedora goodies like Stickers, badges or DVDs for the event
to spread the word about FOSS on a larger scale and put Chandigarh on the
global FOSS map. *
The community organizes these events to achieve its threefold objectives:
- Creation of an open platform to discuss and propagate open source
- Promote indigenous development of open source
- Promote and encourage adoption and implementation of open source
The further details about the event are :

[Idea] How about generating servicepacks of gstreamer* et.al.?
by susmit shannigrahi
I was thinking about this a couple of days before.
Somewhere, I heard someone saying, you need to compile code to get the
musics playing. Now, I corrected them and pointed out that what they
need to do in order to get it playing.
Then this idea came to my mind, what if we generate the service packs
of say gstreamer-plugins*, vlc and the other necessary but restricted
software and host it outside fedora's infrastructure? We can give
these people a single link and say for playing all the audio/video
stuff, go to this link, download this servicepack, come home and
install it.
A few will say, we have to create service packs for each updates
pushed. But really we can do with the servicepack made with base
release only. This is because, he who does not have enough bw at home,
in all probability, will not update his system. So chances are high
that he will still run the base installation.
Should we talk with rpmfusion people?
