The FUDCon that was not to be
by sankarshan
Dear Fedora Community Members in India,
A number of you would be aware that we have been working towards a
FUDCon at FOSS.IN. I had recently made a blog post on that note as well.
Today, I would like to share the news that this is a FUDCon that is not
meant to be. Since yesterday evening, certain significant points of
disagreement have come up between the teams working towards FUDCon and
FOSS.IN. As such, in light of those issues, it is best that the FUDCon
is not gone through with at FOSS.IN
I will be getting in touch with the speakers who travel costs have been
sponsored in part or full by The Fedora Project.
FOSS.IN is a leading event and we, at The Fedora Project, wish the event
and the team working tirelessly behind the scenes all the best and
success they so much deserve.
There are positives to everything and the run up to the FUDCon has
brought a small number of wonderful members from the Fedora Community
closer together. They have been planning, coordinating, scheduling and
working like a well oiled machine. That is a great find. And, we will
continue that momentum and harmony.
We have come a long way since The Fedora Project Day at FOSS.IN last
year, and, though we have ambitious dreams for The Fedora Project this
year (and the coming year), we have a fantastic set of people who will
be making that happen.
And, since it is always best to end with a smile - here's something to
keep you busy : Susmit Shannigrahi is now the proud owner of the largest
set of rare FUDCon swag.
Rock on,
Sankarshan

Hello everyone,
Yes, it is that time of the year again, when there
is a nip in the air, and a young person's fancy
lightly turns to thoughts of Freed.in, http://freed.in
The third iteration of the event has now been
scheduled for Fri. and Sat., Feb. 20th and 21st, 2009,
at the same venue as before: The School of Information
Technology , Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi.
As with previous events, we seek to move beyond the
confines of the software world, to join hands with
like-minded people in other areas, and help share the
ideals of Free/Open Source Software (FOSS). The focus
on open content, and unfettered access to knowledge
continues, and this time we have tangible projects
in mind, including:
o The Open Source Drug Discovery (OSDD) project
(http://osdd.org)
o Open content, and open access:
* Wikipedia, and similar projects like OpenStreetMap
* Open access to scientific data, and open publishing
* Open courseware
o FOSS technology
o The community within, and beyond FOSS
Freed.in (http://freed.in) is an event of, by, and for
the community, and is open to all participants. All planning
will be done through the public Wiki at
http://wiki.linux-delhi.org/cgi-bin/twiki/Freed . Immediate
collateral documents are under
http://wiki.linux-delhi.org/cgi-bin/twiki/Freed/FreedDocs
Each one of you is most cordially invited to participate in
this event, and make it your own. You can take part as:
o A speaker: Please see the call for papers at
http://wiki.linux-delhi.org/cgi-bin/twiki/Freed/CallforPapers
including a PDF copy. Please do circulate this far, and
wide.
o A volunteer: Add yourself to the topmost table at
http://wiki.linux-delhi.org/cgi-bin/twiki/Freed/VolunteersList
and we will be in touch. Freed.in meetings from tomorrow
onwards are public, held every Friday, and will be
announced here.
o A participant: Come to the event, and bring your friends,
and family. Registration on http://freed.in will open soon.
o A sponsor: Please contact someone from the management team
listed at
http://wiki.linux-delhi.org/cgi-bin/twiki/Freed/FreedManagers
Regards,
Gora

Workout for FUDcon.
by susmit shannigrahi
Hi,
Has what gets done in FUDcon got fixed?
If it is not concrete yet, I have something in mind.
1. I am recently working on a mirror on a HDD thing, which is a
external HDD, containing the latest Fedora relase and synchronised
regularly.
2. The concept is you can take it with you, plug in to any computer
(for the time being plug in to a fedora installation) of a LAN, and
turn that computer into a local mirror for the LAN.
3. Also we should have a script which takes the server ip as an
argument and makes rpm containing the repo file for local mirror (as
livna rpm) on the run for client machines.
This way we can have everything at our disposal, which would be great
way to take a whole fedora mirror to any event, or to set up a
permanent mirror anywhere.
I am onto the scripts for a few days, and would like to get ideas and
workouts and improvements at FUDcon. I shall have the proof of concept
scripts by then.
So what I am proposing for FUDcon from my part is, a small workshop on
mirroring (may be 20 mins to 30 mins, mirroring does not take more
than that :) along with brainstorming/scripting etc for
mirror-out-of-a-box solution.
What do you say? Doable?
Thanks.
