Hi list,
this is the summary of today's meeting:
- Welcome app: the current prototype is based on gnome tour but is pretty complex. We'd like to re-implement it in Python with python-tk to reduce the required dependencies and make it easier to maintain and package. Eduard will look into this in 2022 or Dan if he gets to it.
- color scheme: it is included in the default start config, but will not be included in existing setups. Can we somehow get it added using the new include directive?
- different terminal: xfce4-terminal should be the new default, but it is not properly included -> Dan will fix this
- improve our outreach: * welcome app is really needed * reach out to the social media team to help us with our media coverage
- Next meeting to follow up this year -> shall we meet in two weeks?
Cheers,
Dan

Hey guys,
I really wanted to attend the meeting, but could not make it in time.
There are two points I want to comment on:
1.

Wouldn't GTK be a better option? If using Python, the only additional package you need is python3-gobject. It might have some benefits, like free Wayland support, if the SIG is moving to Sway some day.
I am willing to help with that.
2.

As the include directive is fairly new, most existing users might not have one in their config.

Damian

Well, the i3 SIG will most likely never move to Wayland (just by design). We'll all eventually move to Sway (probably), but then we'll just join the existing sway SIG ;-).
I have proposed to use python-tk as it requires absolutely no dependencies besides Python. The Rust version that I created, that is based on gnome-tour, was written in GTK as well and to be frankly honest: I did not like it that much, it appeared overly complex to me for what we're trying to achieve here (more or less just a slide show).
However, if you're willing to write a good chunk of the code and ensure that it is maintainable, then I will most certainly not limit you to any tech stack.

I don't think that the include directive can be used for this automatically. If at all, we could provide a custom color scheme config file and document how you can include that in your configs.
Cheers,
Dan
