Bug ID: 2137825 Summary: fontconfig 2.14.1 breaks hinting Product: Fedora Version: rawhide Status: NEW Component: fontconfig Assignee: tagoh@redhat.com Reporter: vondruch@redhat.com QA Contact: extras-qa@fedoraproject.org CC: ajax@redhat.com, caillon+fedoraproject@gmail.com, fonts-bugs@lists.fedoraproject.org, gnome-sig@lists.fedoraproject.org, i18n-bugs@lists.fedoraproject.org, mclasen@redhat.com, pnemade@redhat.com, rstrode@redhat.com, sandmann@redhat.com, tagoh@redhat.com Target Milestone: --- Classification: Fedora
Description of problem: After update to fontconfig-2.14.1-1.fc38.x86_64, fonts have red/blue shadows. Therefore I guess the font hinting is somehow broken.
Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable): $ rpm -q fontconfig fontconfig-2.14.1-1.fc38.x86_64
How reproducible:
Steps to Reproduce: 1. This is most obvious in TB email from BZ, where the '|' pipe character has shadows. 2. 3.
Actual results: The characters has red/blue shadows
Expected results: Characters without shadows
Additional info: I have downgraded back to fontconfig-2.14.0-2.fc37.x86_64 for the time being.

--- Comment #1 from Akira TAGOH tagoh@redhat.com --- Which desktop are you using? 2.14.1 enables 10-sub-pixel-rgb.conf by default but only when it isn't set anywhere else. if it isn't comfortable for your monitor, you may want to enable other sub-pixel antialiasing option from either of 10-sub-pixel-*.conf into your config.

--- Comment #2 from Vít Ondruch vondruch@redhat.com --- (In reply to Akira TAGOH from comment #1)
Which desktop are you using?
Gnome.
Going to ignore the rest of the answer for now, because I hope there is better solution then me fiddling with some configuration files.

--- Comment #10 from Vít Ondruch vondruch@redhat.com --- I have updated yesterday to fontconfig-2.14.1-2.fc38.x86_64 and the rendering looks fine. Do I understand correctly that the changes which triggered this tickets are now just KDE specific? Anyway, this seems to be resolved, so thank you.

--- Comment #11 from Akira TAGOH tagoh@redhat.com --- Yes, sub-pixel rendering with RGB-striped layout is enabled for KDE only according to their request.
