Bug ID: 2402681
Summary: Gtk4 applications use `gtk4-im` instead of
`gnome-shell` (wayland) input in gnome **if** XFCE has
also been installed and used
Product: Fedora
Version: 43
OS: Linux
Status: NEW
Component: ibus
Severity: medium
Assignee: tfujiwar(a)redhat.com
Reporter: mfabian(a)redhat.com
QA Contact: extras-qa(a)fedoraproject.org
CC: i18n-bugs(a)lists.fedoraproject.org, tfujiwar(a)redhat.com
Target Milestone: ---
Classification: Fedora
All Gtk3 and Gtk4 applications should use Wayland input in a Gnome Wayland
session.
After a default installation they do this when logging into a Gnome Wayland
session.
But, when installing XFCE and KDE as well and logging out of Gnome, then
logging in to XFCE, then KDE, then logging in to Gnome again, the Gtk4
applications suddenly use the Gtk4 imput module (`gtk4-im`) not the Wayland
input (`gnome-shell`).
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
- Install Fedora-Workstation-Live-43-20251008.n.0.x86_64.iso
- Reboot and log into Gnome Wayland
- Add ibus-typing-booster to the input methods
- Open setup tool of ibus-typing-booster, set debug level to 5 in the Options
tab
- Open gnome-text-editor
- Type something with ibus-typing-booster. At the top of the candidate list you
see:
"🪟gnome-shell:gnome-text-editor:..."
That shows that Wayland input is used, which is good.
- Log out
- Log into XFCE
- Log out
- Log into Plasma (KDE)
(this login to Plasma is needed to be able to login to the Gnome Wayland
session again,
without that extra login to Plasma, gnome-shell will crash,
see: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2402651
- Log into Gnome Wayland
- Open gnome-text-editor
- Type something using ibus-typing-booster. At the top of the candidates list
you see now:
"🪟gtk4-im:gnome-text-editor:..."
That shows that now the Gtk4 input module is used, not Wayland input.
Gtk3 still uses Wayland input, you can see that by typing now with
ibus-typing-booster
into a Gtk3 application.
- Check the environment:
`env | grep ibus`
`env | grep GTK` shows that `GTK_IM_MODULE` is **not** set (good! It should
default to Wayland input then, but it does not.

This seems happens when installing plasma-desktop on other spins such as XFCE.
and even if IMSETTINGS_IGNORE_SESSION=KDE-wayland is set, imsettings-daemon
brings up ibus somehow. no changes after installing imsettings-plasma package.
This get normal after removing /etc/xdg/autostart/imsettings-start.desktop.
So apparently imsettings-daemon doesn't have proper information from a process
inherited from the desktop session.
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1.Install XFCE Live for example
2.Install plasma-desktop
3.Change the desktop from lightdm
4.Login
Actual Results:
ibus shows a warning about incorrect startup path
Expected Results:
no warnings

Dear package maintainer,
This is an automated bug created due to a FTBFS when rebuilding this package
for the change proposal CMake 4.0.
The rebuild is being tracked in
https://copr.fedorainfracloud.org/coprs/cmake-4.0.
See https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Changes/CMake4.0 for more information on how
to make the package compatible.
More specifically, depending on the state of the project:
- If it is actively maintained, please update the `cmake_minimum_required`, and
instruct upstream to do so as well.
To minimize future maintenance, please add a higher bound as well,
preferrably with the highest CMake version being
tested. You may use 4.0 as the higher bound as this is being tested in the
tracked copr project.
- If the project is not maintained, you may add
`CMAKE_POLICY_VERSION_MINIMUM=3.5` as a CMake variable or environment
variable.
You can check the build locally following the instructions in the change
proposal, or submit your build to the tracking
copr project.
Let me know if you encounter any issues, or need any other help.

the problem is how ibus integrates with Wayland. This results in DBus errors,
wallpaper failures, and screensaver crash notifications. IBus should be called
from the
desktop session in Wayland. For
KDE, you can launch
systemsettings utility and go
to “Input & Output” → “Keyboard”
→ “Virtual Keyboard” section and
select “IBus wayland” icon and
click “Apply” button to configure
IBus in Wayland. For other
desktop sessions, you can run
ibus start command. Please
refer each document about the
“Wayland input method”
configuration. Before you
configure the “Wayland input
method”, you should make sure
that QT_IM_MODULE and
GTK_IM_MODULE environment
variables are unset in the
desktop session.
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1.Install Fedora 44 Budgie Rawhide
2. Log into Budgie (Wayland)
3.Use the default installed packages
4. Observe desktop startup and notifications

Hello, I've recently started using RHEL 10 as my desktop system, but I've
noticed that it doesn't include ibus-rime.
I tried building this package independently in copr, but it failed. I'm hoping
you can provide this package in EPEL.
ibus-rime in Fedora is excellent. I eagerly hope to see it in RHEL as well.
