I am attaching a PDF file "Mangal and Marathi script.pdf"  which lists some of the differences in the Mangal Font and Marathi Script. The detailed comparison will need inputs from Marathi calligraphers and script experts.

Can you describe the problems in current standard Devanagri fonts when
writing Marathi? What do they need non-standard non-free fonts for?

Don't hesitate to use a paper, a pen and a scanner to show what is
expected!
