My Gnome terminal windows have all gone taller and less wide as a result of the change. I use Liberation Mono Regular font at 8 points, with autohinting turned on (looks better on my screens).
What is the DPI setting for your screen so that I can investigate? I do see narrower glyphs assuming DPI=96 but the x-height (lowercase letters) is quite consistent with the native hinter. The DPI setting is important because this is when the point-to-ppem rounding used to occur.
