The unrounded height is 12.47 pixels for 8.25 pt and 12.09 pixels for 8 pt. gnome-terminal likely relies on something else.
If I set the font size to 8.25 with the old freetype, the size of the terminal does not change at all when compared to 8 points. So, I'm guessing both get rounded down to 12.
The first time I see a change is if I set the size to 8.7 (which Gnome terminal sets as 8.699). The spacing between lines is still a lot smaller than with the new freetype.
