--- Comment #6 from Joel Uckelman <uckelman(a)nomic.net> ---
I see the same problem with DejaVu Sans Mono in gvim at 10.5pt on F20---the
underscores are invisible at Slight hinting, which is unfortunately the hinting
setting which I want.

Summary: [Regression] Chinese emulated Bold uneven and no

Product: Fedora
Version: 18
Component: fontconfig
Severity: unspecified
Priority: unspecified
Reporter: htl10(a)users.sourceforge.net
Created attachment 671807

the test.Rnw file mentioned
Description of problem:
R has a way of generating pdf plots with Chinese annotations via cairo. The
plot titles are in sans:style=Bold, I believe. In F17 WenQuanYi Zen Hei is
subsetted and embedded as truetype. But in F18, an unknown bitmap is embedded
as CairoFont-?-? .
Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
fontconfig-2.10.2-1.fc18.x86_64
cairo-1.12.8-1.fc18.x86_64
freetype-2.4.10-2.fc18.x86_64
How reproducible:
Always.
Steps to Reproduce:
1. run "R --vanilla CMD Sweave test.Rnw" (test.Rnw will be attached)
2. look at the test-002.pdf generated.
3.
Actual results:
Uneven boldening title
Expected results:
even boldening of the title
Additional info:
You need to run R under R to do this ; xvfb-run could be used for headless
system.

--- Comment #1 from T.C. Hollingsworth <tchollingsworth(a)gmail.com> ---
Yeah this doesn't handle Unicode at all at the moment. *hangs head in shame*
I fixed outputting records with unicode chars upstream last night:
https://github.com/tchollingsworth/ttname/commit/0a352b9a3b6aeb558e3cd4d293…
Handling input is a little trickier thanks to Python 2's warty unicode support
in the stdlib. I'm fairly sure I've got it working right locally but I'm super
busy today so I'd rather wait until later this week when I can test it better
(and expand the test suite to cover it). The current situation of bombing out
with an exception is definitely better than me pushing something half-arsed
that may potentially silently corrupt files. :-p
Thanks for the report!
