Summary: Merge new characters from Chromium OS core fonts
Product: Fedora
Version: rawhide
Platform: All
OS/Version: Linux
Status: NEW
Severity: medium
Priority: low
Component: liberation-fonts
AssignedTo: psatpute(a)redhat.com
ReportedBy: cody(a)zone38.net
QAContact: extras-qa(a)fedoraproject.org
CC: petersen(a)redhat.com,
fonts-bugs(a)lists.fedoraproject.org,
psatpute(a)redhat.com, i18n-bugs(a)lists.fedoraproject.org
Classification: Fedora
Description of problem:
Chromium OS includes new fonts called Arimo, Cousine, and Tinos. These fonts
are, in fact, identical in design to the the Liberation fonts; more accurately,
they're new font files direct from Steve Matteson using the same character
designs as Liberation. However, these fonts include a vastly larger character
set, including such glyphs as Polytonic Greek, Altaic Cyrillic and IPA that
might be useful for certain locales.
The latest revision of the Chromium fonts, as of now, is downloadable here:
http://commondatastorage.googleapis.com/chromeos-localmirror/distfiles/cr...
And the relevant issues from Chromium OS are here:
http://code.google.com/p/chromium-os/issues/detail?id=5287
http://code.google.com/p/chromium-os/issues/detail?id=5941
Would it be possible to work with Google and/or Steve Matteson to get these new
characters merged into the Liberation fonts as well?

Originally reported by Michael Biebl to the Debian Bug Tracking System, see
<http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=616620>:
Hi,
since upgrading ttf-liberation from 1.05.2.20091019-4 to
1.06.0.20100721-1, the letter 'u' and 'U' has become much "thiner" in
comparison to other letters. See the attached screenshot I took from the
SPON website, especially the word "um".
I downgraded to the squeeze version again and the problem is gone, so
this is a regression of the new upstream release.
Cheers,
Michael
> Is only the sans variant affected or also the serif one?
Hard to say, as the serif letter is completely different. I only recognized
this
with the sans version.
I have to add, that I use LCD, RGB, and full hinting

fontconfig-2.8.0-3
fc-match on "pa" gives different results than "pa-in".
$ fc-match :lang=pa
Lohit-Punjabi.ttf: "Lohit Punjabi" "Regular"
$ fc-match :lang=pa-in
DroidSansArabic.ttf: "Droid Sans" "Regular"
fontconfig knows about "pa" and "pa-pk", because "pa-in" isn't an exact match
it considers the full list of pa + pa-pk fonts and returns one of that set
fairly arbitrarily, better would be to return a "pa" more generic version when
there's no exact territory match.

fc-match -v "Times New Roman"
Description of problem:
Archaic "Berling Antiqua" has an alternative name field of "Times New Roman". I
guess here that there's arguably no bug seeing as the font *does* name itself
Times New Roman in one of its name fields, but it is a real nuisance as it gets
preferred above e.g. Liberation Serif if you have the misfortune to install it
How reproducible:
100%
Actual results:
fc-match "Times New Roman"
berling.ttf: "Times New Roman" "Normal"
Expected results:
Ideally we could somehow blacklist/scrub the "Times New Roman" name from
"Berling Antiqua"
