Hello everyone
My name is Alex Alexis, I am a long time user of fedora (before core, and before fedora (redhat)). I recently graduated and received an MS in Computer Science from CCNY (The city college of New York). I am interested in further developing my skills in C++, but in the interim would be willing to help however I can. I haven't had a chance to work on any large projects but I would say I have a good understanding of programming, I am an avid technology enthusiast and I am comfortable learning new and interesting software. I am familiar with code management tools such as git and mercurial. I would really like a chance to do more ... Give back, participate and get to know the folks who makes this great piece of software work.
Thanks
Alex Alexis

Welcome to Fedora!

Ah! There's always work for folks that are already well versed with git and friends. I don't think we have a C++ project in Fedora at the moment, since most of our programming is on the infra side and involves python in general[1]. I'm a C/C++ fan too. Most of my non fedora code is in C/C++. I've found that is is quite easy to learn other languages once you're good at any one of them. If you're up to it, you can check if any of the easy fix tasks interest you[2]. There are, of course, many many C ++ packages in Fedora and if you'd like, you could help maintain them[3] or even package up new ones from the wishlist[4].
There's also a lot of non programming work happening in Fedora. The docs project is looking for cookbook contributors. All you need to know is git, and you can help them write up recipes[4]. The fedora-magazine is also always looking for new folks that can write up posts for it.[5]
Give back, participate and get to know the folks who makesthis great piece of software work.
Great to hear! I hope you'll dive into something and get to talk to more Fedora community members in the process. The Fedora community in NA is quite active. Keep an eye out for events - there may be one right near you![6]
As always, if you have any questions, please ask away. You can ask anyone, not just me :)

Hello everyone
I am Praveen Patil from India. I am a physics teacher and free software user and promoter.
I am working with a project ExpEYES http://www.expeyes.in as a volunteer and have been involved in FOSS training programs for science teachers.
Using Free Software and ExpEYES for classroom and laboratory demonstrations for 11th and 12 grade. Maintaining a blog for ExpEYES. Working e-content developer for National Repository of Open Educational Resources (NROER) for School Education by Central Institute of Education Technology (CIET), NCERT, New Delhi.
For ExpEYES project I have been preparing Ubuntu based live cds with science packages for teachers and students and have been distributing the same.
Recently I met many volunteers and ambassadors from fedora at FOSSASIA-2014 and got inspired with fedora culture and spirit. I am now using fedora and have also created Live cd for distributing it with ExpEYES. I am conducting free-software awareness programs for science students and teachers in my region.
I wish to be an active volunteer of fedora and contribute positively to FOSS. I also wish to contribute to fedora planet and the magazine. Please guide and help.

Hello all! =D
I'm Ivan Weinberg. I come from Argentina and I am a Technical Infrastructure Support student. I love open source software and Fedora is my chosen distribution since aproximately last year or the end of the previous one.
I'm taking the steps to become a Fedora Ambassador here in Argentina, along with my friend Mariela (her IRC is AleiraM). I'd like to be an official promoter very much and I'll do my best to honor Fedora. =)

Oh! That's awesome! I know quite a few folks in LATAM. I hope you get sponsored quickly! Again, if you need any help, feel free to contact any of us - although, I'm quite sure you're already in contact with your mentor.
Please extend a warm welcome to Mariela too. I hope to see you folks up and about on the mailing lists etc. real soon :)

Hi Praveen,

I just looked at the website. ExpEYES looks really interesting. It isn't my area of expertise, but would the software you're using would fit into Fedora Electronic Lab or an education spin? You can even have a Fedora ExpEYES spin actually. Take a look at the proposal process if you'd want to work on a spin. You'd first need to package the software up and make it available in the Fedora repositories before you can propose a spin, though: http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Spins_Process

That's really great to hear. If you'd like any help from the ambassadors team, please let us know. Ambassadors near you can come down and help you organise your workshops. You can also request funds from the budget to get Fedora CDs/DVDs burnt in large quantities, as well as to buy swag (stickers/posters) for your events.
I wish to be an active volunteer of fedora and contribute positively to FOSS. I also wish to contribute to fedora planet and the magazine.
Awesome! You can always write education related posts on the magazine too. It'll be easier for users to install the software if it's available in the Fedora repositories. It might be slightly incoherent for a post on the fedora magazine to ask folks to install debian ;) If you need any help with this, drop me an email, or find me on the IRC. I'm already a package maintainer and can help you with your spec files/reviews and the rest. We could even get together folks and have an IRC FAD (Fedora Activity Day) for this!
If you can, it'll be nice to drop in one of the APAC IRC meetings that occur on alternate Saturdays and get to know the folks.
Hi Ankur
Thanks a million for all the information and encouragement. I am working on your suggestions and exploring the Fedora Spin process. I am also working on preparing rpm package for ExpEYES. Since I am new to all these things I may need your help.
We have planned for celebrating Software Freedom Day in our city Belgaum. Need to have some fedora stickers, button badges and fedora Cds. I will request for some funding for the event. We have also planned to have regular FOSS activities every alternate Friday with a theme "Friday with Foss and Fedora" Please suggest some ideas to make it useful to people in this region.
Fedora Ambassador Kushal is my mentor and is constantly encouraging me to contribute positively to the community. I will be asking for his help too.
Right now the only problem I have is to contribute to fedora planet or magazine easily or even to have a fedora mail alias one needs to be a member of one non-cla group. I have applied for membership of some groups including Free Media group. Can you please help me in this regard?
Thanks a lot again.

Great. Are you able to access the APAC trac yet since you aren't yet an ambassador? If you can't please drop me an e-mail offlist and I'll open a ticket on your behalf. Kushal should also be able to do this, of course. Please read the reimbursement guidelines before you plan your event, though. There's a lot of important information there that will come in handy to you:

It really depends on the current status of the region. If people aren't already aware of Fedora and FOSS in general, may be it'll be a good idea to first increase the user base - help them install systems and use them for daily tasks - internet browsing, chat, office work using libre office and the sort. It's most important to help them understand the advantages of FOSS and Linux over proprietary software - an open code base implies better security, for one.
Fedora Ambassador Kushal is my mentor and is constantly encouraging me to contribute positively to the community. I will be asking for his help too.

I'll drop Frank and e-mail requesting him to approve your membership to the freemedia group. If you need media to send out as a freemedia contributor, you can request funds from APAC too. I think we have some left over.
Thanks a lot again.
No worries. We're always happy to help new folks join the community :)
