I often want to send people to Join Fedora, to, you know, Join Fedora. :)
But I'm actually a little confused where to start.
Héctor is re-doing https://whatcanidoforfedora.org/, and that's going to be nice, but I don't think it's ready and also I don't necessarily think it's the right path for everyone.
The first google hit that comes up is https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Join, but ... that's pretty old, not very well maintained, and doesn't really represent current activities in the project very well. Plus, I do not want to send new folks into the minefield that is the wiki right away.
Also, "join.fedoraproject.org" currently links there.
Then, there's this: https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/fedora-join/
which I _think_ is helpful, but I find somewhat confusing because it mixes up the business of the Join SIG (that is, all the helpful people working to provide a nice onboarding process) with the onboarding process itself.
That page points to https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Welcome, which...
1. Is frighteningly bare-bones. 2. Has the "it's the wiki" problem again 3. Points to Telegram — I don't have a problem with that as a platform to bring people on, but as a service outside of project control, shouldn't be where we start. (If people are on and comfortable with Telegram, cool, let's meet them there. But I don't want to give the impression that signing up for telegram is a first step to 4. Also IRC; that's a temporary problem until we get chat.fedoraproject.org officially launched, though.
Anyway, in short, what's the link I should use for someone who wants to get involved?
And, leading question: should we have a user-focused "Join Fedora" docs section on docs.fedoraproject.org that is separate from the Join SIG docs?
Greetings Project Leader, Sir,
I do see your points and I agree that it's all a bit of a confusion as to where new users should be directed to.
Actually, I myself joined only a month ago and I must admit the Fedora Join SIG did actually get me confused at first.
The link to the Fedora Join SIG Docs: https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/fedora-join/
I think should be moved to : https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/fedora-join-sig
instead which may ease the confusion a bit.
Finallly, I am all for having a user-focused "Join Fedora '' docs section on docs.fedoraproject.org that is separate from the Join SIG docs.
Maybe we could rename the Fedora Join SIG, "Fedora Mentors" as it is essentially what they do. When helping out new contributors. This will allow us to further avoid confusion.
Also I felt a little nervous writing an email to the big project leader.

Hello,
I often want to send people to Join Fedora, to, you know, Join Fedora. :)
Couldn't agree more ;P
Héctor is re-doing https://whatcanidoforfedora.org/, and that's going to
be nice, but I don't think it's ready and also I don't necessarily think it's the right path for everyone.
A nice initiative for someone who wants to join Fedora but they aren't quite sure of what they want to do.
The task at hand is to conveniently onboard the ones who now know what they want to do and hence, are joining.
I'm afraid it still has to be a docs page that we have to lead people to as that's probably the best way to give insights on what the community is about, how they achieve their purpose and how the new contributors can be of assistance.
We would want to increase the visibility of https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/fedora-join/ page over the ones at wiki in search engines. We'd also want to change it to point towards Chat fp.o. instead of the Telegram group.

Yeah, it's a Venn Diagram with a lot of overlap, but there are a lot of Fedora Join Team activities that are outside of mentorship, and a lot of mentorship activity that is outside of Fedora Join Team.
I _love_ thinking about what to name things, so it's very tempting for me to go down that path. But really, I don't care as long as it works, and the people working on the team feel supported and empowered, and of course the people coming _to_ the team for help do as well.
ohh I see your point @mattdm, but we're falling again in wiki pages, and I've remembered now this wiki page, is not actually SYNC with the new Org chart IMHO, this wiki can't be the point of attract newcomers to the community.

+1 for a separate this section of the docs....

From my years of using Fedora, my experience is that the fedoraforum.org attracts and keeps more Fedoraians (Fedora users), than any other site or URL It would be good to have some section within the Fedoraforum.org to post interesting activities or links to topics that are on the Fedora Web site. (eg getting Fedora, New developments re Rawhide, etc). There could be a daily link from the forum to Fedora Magazine, with a topic title posting and small writeup.

That sounds great! Keep in mind, though, that fedoraforum.org is unofficial. It's awesome if people are interested in participating there, and I'm glad you've found it a helpful community — but it can't be our official new contributor destination.

- Is frighteningly bare-bones.
- Has the "it's the wiki" problem again
- Points to Telegram — I don't have a problem with that as a platform to bring people on, but as a service outside of project control, shouldn't be where we start. (If people are on and comfortable with Telegram, cool, let's meet them there. But I don't want to give the impression that signing up for telegram is a first step to
- Also IRC; that's a temporary problem until we get chat.fedoraproject.org officially launched, though.
Anyway, in short, what's the link I should use for someone who wants to get involved?
I tend to send people here, which sends them to the Fedora Join channels. More often than not, folks that come in get a Welcome to Fedora ticket opened for them, and then there's quite a bit of info there for them to go on: https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/project/join/
And, leading question: should we have a user-focused "Join Fedora" docs section on docs.fedoraproject.org that is separate from the Join SIG docs?
We could, but I fear it'll end up outdated like the wiki page or another docs page. I don't know if we have the resources to keep another set of docs up to date. (The page linked above probably needs to be updated to put in links to chat.fp.o for example.)
That's sort of why I tend to nudge people to chat to folks on the channels---we may not have time to update all the docs with each change in the community, but we tend to know what's up collectively and can pass on the info when we speak to newcomers.

Oh! Yes, that's good. And it's, um, in a docs section which I am nominally an owner of, so I should really be aware!

I think the linked page is sufficient. Thanks for reminding me of it. :)

Yeah, I agree — chat and other 'dynamic' approaches are best. I've updated the wiki page so that it redirects to the above doc, and by consequence join.fedoraproject.org.
