Hello,
Would any one here volunteer to send out a monthly e-mail welcoming new subscribers and potential contributors? Your responsibilities will be:
- think up a template to send out to help new members tell us about themselves (something like this that the infra group sends out: https://lists.fedoraproject.org/archives/list/infrastructure@lists.fedorapro...)
- send it out every month
- welcome each poster, introduce them to the rest, help them get started
- anything else you can think up to help new people here!
It'll require a few hours a month at most. The task does not require any technical skills, so *anyone* can take this up---even if they are just starting out themselves! :)

Do you mean subscribers to this mailing list?
Yep.
The idea is to switch to actively engaging with everyone from of our current method where we passively wait for people to ask queries.

To see people subscribing to this mailng list, one has to be list administrator, isn't it? Or the mail should be blindly sent, even if nobody has subscribed the list?

I was going to leave that to the wrangler to decide. A blind e-mail takes less work and would be a start---we usually have a few new subscribers each month. Targeted e-mails require more work, but are probably more efficient.
It's a chicken and egg problem: an inactive list does not attract subscribers, but without subscribers the list remains inactive. The only way I know of to change things is to keep some activity going consistently. So, the wrangler duties are a long term commitment.

You are right, but what I mean is: since targeted emails are better, how the wrangler could know if someone subscribed to the list, if such people doesn't send any email once subscribed (like a presentation mail, or request for advices or so on)?

Oh, yeh---if they want to go down this path, they'll be given the reigns to the ML as admins. That's the easiest part of this setup :D
So, after all that: would anyone like to volunteer? We'll help, of course :)

Had you gone to FUDCon in Kuala Lumpur? Unless there was another one in KL before, I was there too! XD
So, based on the discussion that we've had, what do you think is the best way forward? How do we increase activity in this mailing list?
(Getting more people to the mailing list is a much harder and higher level problem, so let's not go into that yet.)
Hi Ankur; unfortunately, I missed the second one :( I hope to never miss any other FUDCon anymore
Well, I have some ideas and wrote them in a PDF file: http://www.esfahlani.com/Fedora-Join.pdf
These are just sketched and we have to discuss them

No more FUDCons, though, right? Only Flocks now. Next one is in Budapest, and is open for registration by the way:

Awesome! Thanks very much! I'm already quite interested in the automated reply bot you mention there, but perhaps we need to think of the pros and cons before we dive in to it. Give me a few days, and I'll get back with my thoughts.
Everyone else, please go over Hesam's ideas and tell us what you think---all feedback is welcome!

Hi all! Thanks Hesam for putting together these ideas. I think this is a great start. My feedback can be summarized in three points:
1. Automation is good, but keep it human 2. Connect good ideas to sub-projects / teams for collaboration 3. Highlight existing contribution opportunities
== Automated communication
I like automating regular announcements or introductions. This is a lot of work for individual people and responses to introductions usually include the same information across replies.
However, it is important to keep a human aspect. Automating "people tasks" comes at a risk of being too impersonal. When someone first joins a community, asking questions in a group chat or mailing list is intimidating. So, automated communication should emphasize individual people who can help as mentors, and places you can ask for help. I strongly believe in including names + contact info for people who are willing to be mentors for newcomers and to answer newbie questions (patience is a good quality to have for this role).
== Connect good ideas for collaboration
I like posters and shout-outs (especially on social media). Some of these ideas are related to Marketing Team responsibilities. Bringing new contributors and these ideas to the Marketing Team may also help them build up more contributors. And I think that is a main goal of the Join SIG: to connect new people and their ideas to the teams that can support them.
Including the Marketing Team in this discussion cannot hurt.
== Highlight existing contribution opportunities
There are tons of things to do in Fedora, but sometimes the hardest part is finding them (or figuring out where in Fedora to bring a Cool New Idea). I think the Join SIG can help highlight these opportunities and connect new people to those opportunities.
This could be an interesting thing to include in an automated email / introduction (e.g. it could be a link to a wiki page where Join SIG members update different contribution opportunities month-to-month).
These are some of my thoughts after reading through the PDF. I hope the feedback is useful. Thanks again Hesam for taking the lead here.
Hello everyone,
I was waiting for Hesam to reply but I've since learned that on account of Fedora's export compliance regulations[1], Hesam will not be able to continue their participation in Fedora.
Thanks for your feedback, Jflory! I'll have a look and see what we can work on in the short term future to get things going.

There is nothing stopping us from having FUDCons except for proposals that have defined goals and outcomes. The last round of FUDCon proposals didn't go much beyond, "We want this year's FUDCon to be in X." This is why we stopped funding them until they had a mission.

Thanks for clarifying this, Bex. For some reason, I had thought that Flock had *replaced* FUDCons. Good to know that this is not the case :D

Not sure---I get *all* the e-mails. Most of them are spam. I think it would be less than 10 subscriptions to the list a month currently.

Hello. Do you think that this is still needed? If yes, and if there is nobody else volunteering in this task, I propose myself.
Let me know.

Maybe we should pause this for the moment? If we do implement the process we're discussing in https://pagure.io/mindshare/issue/147, we may not need a welcome wrangler.
What do you think?
