Good *morning, *(or whatever time of day it is in your land)
I just graduated from the Computer Science and Engineering course from a
local collage here in my home town.
I have been receiving these emails for quite a while now. I am very
interested in the hard work you are all doing. I have been unable to
help out due to the intense course-load that my school put on my
shoulders, but now that I'm no longer under that burden, I am hoping to
help out in some way.
Here are things I'm struggling with:
1. Format. I don't know any of the rules of communication. It is a
little intimidating even writing this email as I am unaware of forum
rules or even how to use IRC. I have known about it for years but have
never been involved with any groups that required me to join. So any
communication with any of you is done with extreme caution and
hesitation as I don't know what I'm supposed to do, where to stand and
how I'm supposed to dress.
2. Tutorials. I think the classroom idea is great for some people, but
I think written tutorials on topics that we are struggling with would be
a lot better as they allow people to follow them at their own pace.
Having an email or forum link to ask questions about the tutorials will
allow moderators to update the tutorials with FAQ answers and such.
Even a tutorial on how to use IRC or what to expect, how to register a
nickname would be extremely helpful.
3. Still have no idea how to create an RPM of any project I'm working
on. Sometimes the technical documents on how to do things are written
in what seems like legal documents. Having a step-by-step walk-through
makes all the difference in the world. Again following the format in #2
where there is a link for FAQs and someone that can answer bizarre
questions when the time comes would really help.
4. Understanding that no two contributors are the same and Understanding
that no two projects are the same. Contributing to one project is
vastly different from contributing to another project. I've looked into
a couple of projects in the past and I was so confused by the tools,
format, and direction that the project was going in. Many of the tools
used in open source projects are totally different that the tools that
are being taught in a programming school.
The desire is there, I want to help out, I'm just feeling like I'm in
over my head and have no idea where to begin. There is no easy way to
break in, it feels like you either know how to do everything already or
you're left to figure it out. I'm not sure what I can do to help.
I hope this helps you all to understand what it feels like from a newer
perspective. Thanks for listening.
