Hello World!
I'm ThaneVim, or just Thane. That's my online handle, at least. I've been
using Linux since I was a freshman in high school, all the way back in
2009. I remember getting annoyed with Windows, with how everything was
requiring the then-too-requiring Windows Vista, something even more out of
reach with my main system being a Core Duo Optiplex, secondhand with Intel
Integrated HD Graphics. -shudder-
So I did an innocent Google search and one thing led to another, and I
downloaded Ubuntu. Yes, I know. Everyone's first in the last like 15-20
years... But that's what was recommended, so that's what I started out
with. I saw the potential, but didn't stick with it. I remember upon
getting it installed almost immediately looking for alternatives, and
finding out about distrowatch. From there, I discovered Fedora with good
ol' Gnome 2.
I don't know what it was about the white menus and everything, but I fell
in love with how Fedora looked and behaved almost immediately. I even
recall finding joy drawing the Fedora logo on my binders at school. And
certainly enjoyed typing "yum install" over "apt-get install" 😂I also
remember finding great humor in the sudo message that I first saw in
Fedora, and using Aamrok over Rhythmbox was another plus.
I've since tinkered with many Linux distros as I've grown up, and yet
always ended up coming back to Fedora. I always knew that I'd someday want
to give back to this community. It was just a matter of when I felt like I
was in a good enough position in life to feel comfortable diving in.
As for my life outside Linux, I enjoy playing games like Space Engineers
and Satisfactory. I'm probably autistic. I have a 3S Arrma RC basher car
that I've already replaced the gears and shocks on. And I have fond
memories of playing Pokemon on my Sansa MP3 player thanks to Rockbox
(whoops, back to Linux...)
I also enjoy hiking, paddleboarding, and just being out in nature. Also
breaking things to see how they work. I don't know why my parents let me
deconstruct so many clock radios in my childhood, but they did and I'm
thankful. I'm a hacker at heart, I love using things in ways never
intended, and I look forward to contributing to Fedora Linux!
To get a bit more in the weeds (this bit to be copy-pasted to the ticket):
The only active participation I have had in FOSS has been testing/QA for
Rockbox
I imagine my place to be in a QA capacity, with focus on KDE Plasma (sorry,
I just don't like how single-focused and bulky Gnome 3 appears to me)
I'm bouncing between Linux Mint and Fedora on my main systems, longing for
staying with Fedora (but had to leave it on my main due to instabilities
that I now think were just the photo frame plasmoid having no cleanup
routine...)
I can mix music and do some sound design/mixing, but my creativity is
lacking
I'm no stranger to the shell
I have experience with git/version control, but it's limited. I will
happily take reminders on it as well as mentoring on all other FOSS tools
of the trade that get used on the day-to-day in QA for Fedora. I have no
issues with self-teaching except that I need cause to figure out and use
software. It's difficult for me to self-motivate learning a tool without
cause (Ie I know all I know about partitioning because I've needed to solve
weird hard drive issues, and from there let curiosity take the reigns)
I'm comfortable on forums and on Matrix chat, though I tend to prefer the
live nature of Matrix. I've moderated forums for small communities,
including a video game that sadly got abandoned...
I used a small amount of the Rockbox mailing list, but that would have been
back in like 2009/10, so this is learning-as-I-go.
I'm looking at putting in somewhere between 1-3 hours a day as a rough
average, so probably 7-12 hours a week on the low end
I want to be as helpful as I can, so I'm open to any questions that may
have been raised from my essay above 😅. Looking forward to working with
everyone!
