Hiya!
I've sent this out to the announce mailing list, and a post on the
commblog is scheduled to go live on November 10 too. Please spread the
word :)
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Hello everyone,
Like any FOSS community project, Fedora relies heavily on volunteers.
It is, therefore, no surprise that we're always looking to increase our
contributor base. There is always so much to be done. Of course, many
teams work in harmony to keep Fedora ticking. Each team tends to have
its own "on-boarding process" for newcomers, which if you've been
around recently, you'll have noticed CommOps[0] has been working on
improving one by one.
Where do we point newcomers now?
--------------------------------
We already have some tools that help people find the right team and
task to get started with. whatcanidoforfedora.org[1], for example, does
an excellent job of matching people to the right team based on
their skills and interests. Another great place to quickly find
something easy to work on is our easy fix ticket list[2]. Last, but not
least, the new Fedora Hubs project[3], which is still a work in
progress, is going to make it even easier to see what's going on in the
community and where one can pitch in.
Talking to a human
------------------
In spite of all the tooling, newcomers seem to respond better to human
interaction. Integration is much easier when you have people to speak
to or query. Even while they're still picking up on the tools and
processes of various teams, they already feel part of the community. It
gives them that bit of confidence needed to actively take part in
discussions or volunteer to take up tasks.
With this in mind, some of us came together to set up the Fedora Join
SIG[4]. Our goal? Simply to set up certain channels where newcomers and
contributors can mix. We've started small with the usual IRC and
mailing list.
- #fedora-join on Freenode[5]
- fedora-join AT lists.fedoraproject.org[6]
We need your help too!
----------------------
Before we begin tweaking our public-facing resources to funnel
newcomers into these channels, we want to make sure that we have enough
contributors available here to receive queries. The purpose of this e-
mail is to ask you to please add these channels to the list that you
already monitor. The more contributors from different parts of the
project we have in the channel, the higher the chances are of newcomers
finding interesting people to work with, interesting things to work on,
all while making friends who mostly outlast the Fedora release.
So, please do hang out in our IRC channel and mailing list to help
newcomers when you can.
Tip: Most IRC clients let you monitor a channel for keywords. For
example, in irssi[7], the following command would monitor the channel
for the word "design":
/hilight -channels #fedora-join design

Hiya,
We had another good meeting today. The idea was to brainstorm on what
tasks we need to work on to get the SIG going. We decided to work on
visibility within the project - i.e., making the community aware of our
presence. Of course, I'll blog about the meeting too.
I've put up a pirate pad here if others want to weigh in and add ideas:

The complete logs are here:

Hiya,
I see a few subscribers to the list. If you'd like the chat, I'm in the
#fedora-join channel now.

If you come around in the channel, just generally, please ping me

Hiya,
We had quite a good meeting today. The primary agenda was to clarify
the purpose of the SIG. Those present agreed that our current mission
statement "to maintain and provide channels of communications to enable
prospective contributors and community members to engage with each
other" made sense, and does not overlap with other SIGs such as CommOps
that are more involved in improving the onboarding processes and
tooling.
<takes a breath>

reply with any questions or concerns so that we can address them before
we re-announce our goal :)

Hiya,
So this is a follow up from the meeting we had. I've summarise some of
it in a blog post that should hopefully show up on the planet[1].
During the meeting, we discussed how we need to ensure that the work
that CommOps is doing towards improving the different teams' onboarding
processes seems to overlap with the general goal of the Join SIG. So,
to make sure we don't have two teams doing the same thing, we should
come up with a set of specific goals and some example tasks that we can
undertake to achieve these goals.
I'm starting with the goals here, and once we have them listed and
agreed to, we will begin working on ideas on how to achieve them. Good
so far, I hope?
OK. So, our aim is summarised on the wiki page here[2]. As it says, we
want to establish a set of communication channels that enable newbies
to speak to contributors and become part of the community socially even
before they join a team and begin contributing.
The point being that the common philosophy we all believe in, and the
relationships we make because we share this view should bind us
together, not only the work we do together, which should be a *result*
of our commitment to our philosophy. Does that make sense? :D
I'll explain this a little more - usually, someone turns up, after some
surfing picks a team to join up, introduces themselves to the team
members, gets to know them, works, makes friends, maybe even finds a
mentor in the team, maybe begins to help another team later and then
makes friends there, and repeat.
What we think would be better is - someone turns up, finds us cool
contributors hanging around here, speaks to us, makes friends, gets to
know how the community works, our philosophy (and finds it awesome) and
what teams we have, finds a mentor (community mentor as opposed to team
specific mentor), picks one or more teams to work in, becomes a part of
the community, not just a specific team in the community.
The major differences in the two are the order in which things happen.
We, or at least I think, that it is more beneficial for people to first
become a social part of the community in general, build relationships,
and then jump into work. The advantages of this order of onboarding are
but not limited to:
- - newbies are not limited to team specific relationships
- - newbies that join together can work together, even if they work in
different teams (we're all always closer to our classmates than to
seniors/juniors)
- - they get a much better overall idea of how the community functions
and are exposed to the workflows of different teams through us
(including tooling, admin, process, goals, tasks, ninjas)
- - they go on to develop into contributors that also have a good idea of
how the multiple arms of the community work to keep Fedora going
So, what do people think about this, does this reasoning appear sound?
So, our goals would be on the lines of:
- - advertise our channels (ML, IRC, something else) as the first stop
for prospective contributors
- - act as a net to gather prospective contributors, help them socialise
with the community and among themselves
- - further, via our conversations with them, help them pick teams where
they can contribute to
- - further, keep a constant ongoing discussion about free software so
that our first foundation is regularly reinforced
Please do share your thoughts. If we can do this in the next few days,
we can then summarise it during next Monday's meeting and begin working
on ideas for tasks. :)

Hi Abhishek, thanks for reaching out to me! Sorry for the late response
from me to get back to you. I assume this was from the FOSS Wave
on-boarding call on Sept. 18!
Glad to know you are enthusiastic about contributing to Fedora! I think
there are plenty of ways you can contribute to the project, and I'd be
happy to help offer some pointers to get you started. I've CC'd the
fedora-join mailing list in this reply to help allow some others in the
community to offer feedback too. I recommend subscribing to this mailing
list while you get started so you can see other replies as well.
https://lists.fedoraproject.org/admin/lists/fedora-join@lists.fedoraproject…
To get started with contributing to Fedora, like I mentioned in the
call, you want to get involved with something that is personally
interesting and engaging to you. You mentioned you are familiar with the
basics of C and C++. What are some of your current technical skills, or
areas you are a little familiar with and want to improve? Also, what
kind of areas in Fedora interest you? If you're not familiar with all of
the different areas of Fedora, take a look at this website to get a feel
for the different areas you can contribute.
http://whatcanidoforfedora.org/
Let us know what some of your interests are and we'd be happy to offer
you further pointers. :)
