New git in EPEL?
by Michael Stahnke
After some discussion in IRC (Fedora-admin) we are wondering if
pushing a new git in EPEL is a good idea. There are some changes such
as git-command vs git command. So there could be some breakage.
Should we push a new git and cause some breakage or stick with old-n-busted?
My thoughts are to push out a new one, since I think if you are using
git, you curse everytime you touch this old crusty thing :)

Recent RPM retention in the EPEL repos
by inode0
Hello all,
Over the past few months I have begun using new features in yum that
support creating local repos that contain a mix of metadata from
various upstream repositories without actually hosting the upstream
packages. The general method of doing this is described here:
http://skvidal.wordpress.com/2009/08/04/creating-a-repo-of-arbitrary-pkgs...
So I can snag a few needed RPMs from EPEL, other upstream repos, and
locally hosted RPMs to create one repository for users to configure
and get all the bits they need for a particular purpose. This has
worked great until recent EPEL updates landed and I discovered that
EPEL does not retain any non-current RPMs in its repositories. That
instantly breaks the "local" repository metadata that contains links
to upstream packages that have been removed.
By keeping even just one previously released version of the package in
the EPEL repos there could be a smooth transition for repos like mine.
I suspect as things develop over time more people will be constructing
repos in this fashion.
A second observation about the current state of the EPEL repos is that
if an EPEL update causes things to break and needs to be reverted it
is much easier for all involved if at least the previous version of
the package remains in the repo to be used for a downgrade by the user
of the repository.
For these reasons I'd like to request that EPEL adopt a repository
policy that better support features of yum in use today and that makes
recovery from the inevitable but rare occasions where downgrades are
required by the end user simple. Keeping one or two previous versions
of packages would accomplish both I think.
Thanks,
John

I'm considering orphaning moin in EPEL
by Ville-Pekka Vainio
Hi,
I took ownership of the moin package in Fedora and EPEL for about six
months ago. I haven't gotten around to doing almost anything to it,
though, mostly because I have to admit that I'm not that interested in
EPEL since I don't run any EL installations myself.
The other hurdle in updating moin is that the package in EPEL is really
old by now. It's in version 1.5 and the newest upstream version is 1.9.
If there was an update submitted for moin, we'd need to also have some
instructions on how to convert the wiki data into a format which is
suitable for the new version, and frankly, I don't know how to do that,
since I've only gotten involved with moin during the 1.7 era. All I know
is that trying to go from 1.5 to 1.6 was really difficult when it was
tested with the Fedora wiki data back when Fedora was still running
moin.
In June I thought I'd have the time and the interest to figure out the
data migration procedure from 1.5 to 1.8, but I clearly don't and I'm
sorry it took me so long to realize this.
So, what should we do with moin in EPEL? Is there anyone on the list
who's interested in taking over the package? If not, I see two
possibilities here. Either we orphan moin completely, or I ship an
update to 1.8 (as 1.9 might be a bit too new for a server oriented
distribution) with a notice saying that those who upgrade are on their
own with the data migration.
