I am building elfutils with just:
./configure CFLAGS=-fPIE && make
systemtap uses something a bit more involved, but the above triggers the
TEXTREL check for me on i386.
On x86_64 it doesn't even get that far:
/usr/bin/ld: libelf_pic.a(elf_error.os): relocation R_X86_64_TPOFF32 against `a local
symbol' can not be used when making a shared object; recompile with -fPIC
libelf_pic.a(elf_error.os): could not read symbols: Bad value
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
So, um. Is there something wrong with, "So don't do that!"?
If you used that configure line for any other package that builds libraries
you would probably break its build too.
