A new version of preferences-desktop-accessibility based on both gnome and oxygen icon themes. The handicap symbol has been dropped comparatively to Echo version. Comments welcome.

Why the hands up? I'd use design very similar to gnome, if not even oxygen in this matter. Plus, it seems a bit asymmetrical, please fix that.
How about trying making it more marble-like (I'm not sure how to better expres it, but the top face look a bit odd so I thought about making this part round like in gnome icons). Maybe even add some light reflection like in video-display (try making the surface reflective). Or maybe the traditional echo approach with white inner outline (and bright blue instead of the dark blue) would be better?
Can you try making the shadow more transparent as it goes farther from the point where the icon stands?
On 256x256 you could bulge the person a little.
The border is too little in contrast with the icon, please fix that as well, I'd suggest both making the icon brighter and the border a bit darker at the bottom.

Updated icons similar to gnome version. Because of the rounded shape, it is not easy to properly set the pixel to reduce the blurriness.

Isn't there a way to make the thin ring look smooth in smaller sizes? Because right now the border on the icon really looks bad :(

Well, if you're going with echo-ish look, the sides need to be white and border metallic. And the inner outline needs to be about twice as thick. The gradient also needs to be smoother (there's visible "step" in 48x48). IMHO you can reuse the one in echo-perspective-action-new template (but bear in mind that this template still has the wrong direction of light). The same goes for the other comments I had.
Alternatively you can also inspire in e.g. help-information from echo ([git]/sources/base/one-canvas/help-information.svg).

Following one of my earlier suggestions, I've tried the marble-like approach (256x256 only). I attach the result. It resembles the gnome icon a lot... It should however scale better to smaller sizes than the more echo-ish version (but might need some tweaking on 48x48 as gnome's SVG renderer does not seem to support masks).

Here is two versions: one is based on traditional echo style and the other is close to gnome version. Shadow has been adjusted for the traditional version. Comments welcome. Should neither got more vote, perhaps both while other can be considered as alternative might work.

I like the marble one better as well (but I'm slightly biased as I made the original design...). As for the consistence, I was trying to make it look consistent with what we have so far (i.e. folders, disk, monitor).
If we'd go with the echo-ish version -- the person looks odd (the one in marble is what I like most), the gradient is sloppy (please, make the blue gradient smooth and linear starting at the bottom and little to left and ending at top and little to right), the side face shouldn't be visible on the bottom (it's different from the marble which is rounded and thin), the shadow needs improvement (it could be similar to the one in marble version). Especially 32x32, but in sizes <=48 the border is too "bold", in 16x16 it's hard to make out a person out of the picture. In 32x32 and 24x24 the person is blurry. In 48x48 and bellow the shadow is too small (in y direction). Oh, and the white inner outline is too thin.
If we go with marble -- the person is blurry here and there (mostly the body) on 48x48 and smaller, the design permits to fix this without significant changes. Also, the marble isn't very well aligned to the grid in smaller sizes. Shadow is too small and too little blurry in 48x48 and bellow. In 16x16 and maybe even in 22x22, drop the thickness changes in hands and legs and make the arms straight like in gnome. That should improve clarity as well. You can see the gnome icon in all sizes here: http://people.freedesktop.org/~jimmac/icons/
Maybe we could reserve the inner white outline only for action and possibly status icons but not for the others. Comments, objections, ...? In echo-perspective we have it only in folder-new so far which falls into this selection (as well as all icons that would contain plus or star emblem).
Martin
Maybe we could only use the white-echo-outline in bigger sizes and remove it in smaller sizes. I think this could work quite well if we make the corrections you suggest :)

Hrm, I'd be against dropping it for smaller sizes. It's an optical guide that helps to better define shape of the icon -- however this does not apply at all on this type of icon when the important content is drawn within...
It's a departure from my original opinion on this subject, but currently I believe the white echo outline is very suitable for icons like arrows, media icons (play, pause, stop, ...), adds a nice touch to dialog icons, but we should not push it everywhere when we can imagine it. Use, but don't overuse. I don't think that if we use this way we would increase inconsistency. On the contrary I think it would make the white outline less ordinary, something to notice and something to help distinguish actions from applications and something that would add echo perspective more special, personalized echoish feel, while maintaining good compatibility with upstream themes like tango/gnome and oxygen.
The white outline should be something that helps to define the icon -- i.e. should be used when the shape of the icon is main characteristic of the icon (like I said above about the arrows or media icons) -- but not when the important content is drawn within, which is this case, or when the object itself isn't suitable for adding this kind of thing (the more 3Dish objects like folders, monitors, boxes, ...).
Martin
Yeah, I could agree in that. But then we should just make a "rule" that we only use the outline for actions and status icons :) If we want consistensy.

Something like that. The wording needs to be more clear -- not all action and status icons will use the white outline (bookmarks or batteries spring to mind), while some other icons might [partly] use it as well (package manager which contains arrow springs to mind). I believe the "shape defining" argument is closest to what we'd like to go for. I have yet to think how to handle emblems (for some, the outline might help, for other it might be the other way round and we'd like to be consistent there, if possible)...
Anyway... this is hijacking the original thread too much so I'm changing the subject :D

Hmm... Yes... But in some kind of way I want status-icons to be completely consistent because it's something we look at very often and some of the first the user will see. Can't we make status icons have a thin white outline always?

Take a peek at status icons from echo-icon-theme. That's about the right amount where to have it (dialog-*, etc.) and where not (gpm-*, etc.) in these.

In that case, can the guideline for Echo Perspective be up? It will be easier to follow these rules instead to looking for the draft version.
