Maybe we could only use the white-echo-outline in bigger sizes and remove it in smaller sizes. I think this could work quite well if we make the corrections you suggest :)

I like the marble one better as well (but I'm slightly biased as I made the original design...). As for the consistence, I was trying to make it look consistent with what we have so far (i.e. folders, disk, monitor).
If we'd go with the echo-ish version -- the person looks odd (the one in marble is what I like most), the gradient is sloppy (please, make the blue gradient smooth and linear starting at the bottom and little to left and ending at top and little to right), the side face shouldn't be visible on the bottom (it's different from the marble which is rounded and thin), the shadow needs improvement (it could be similar to the one in marble version). Especially 32x32, but in sizes <=48 the border is too "bold", in 16x16 it's hard to make out a person out of the picture. In 32x32 and 24x24 the person is blurry. In 48x48 and bellow the shadow is too small (in y direction). Oh, and the white inner outline is too thin.
If we go with marble -- the person is blurry here and there (mostly the body) on 48x48 and smaller, the design permits to fix this without significant changes. Also, the marble isn't very well aligned to the grid in smaller sizes. Shadow is too small and too little blurry in 48x48 and bellow. In 16x16 and maybe even in 22x22, drop the thickness changes in hands and legs and make the arms straight like in gnome. That should improve clarity as well. You can see the gnome icon in all sizes here: http://people.freedesktop.org/~jimmac/icons/
Maybe we could reserve the inner white outline only for action and possibly status icons but not for the others. Comments, objections, ...? In echo-perspective we have it only in folder-new so far which falls into this selection (as well as all icons that would contain plus or star emblem).
