* Your goals in the Fedora Project o What do you want to write about? I'd like to help out wherever I can. o What other documentation do you want to see published? I'd like to see some documents geared towards people just getting started in Linux, or for people trying to make the switch from Windows to Linux. * Historical qualifications o What other projects or writing have you worked on in the past? I started a website (new2linux.com) dedicated to helping people get started in Linux (albeit, i've spent more time getting the web application working than getting articles posted on it). o What level and type of computer skills do you have? Intermediate / Moderate. I've been running Linux since RedHat 7, dedicated Linux user for 2 1/2 - 3 years now. o What makes you an excellent match for the project? I have a general desire to help people get started in Linux and help them in any way possible.

You've come to the right place, Dan! It never hurts to have experience putting up a Web site of your own, but you can also have some very immediate impact by helping John Babich out with the Desktop User Guide, or Bart Couvreur with the Administration Guide.
I'd like to remind everyone to reach out for these folks using the fedora-docs-list here, rather than emailing privately. Fedora is a project that takes openness and transparency very seriously, and it's also very helpful (and empowering!) for lurking readers to see your conversation, issues, problems, and answers.
Please let us know if you have any quesetions. You'll find a lot of what you need at: http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/DocsProject/Join

I would just like to say a huge Welcome!!!! as was mentioned you can help with the DUG (Desktop User Guide) I think the admin guide is just about done? If you need any help in a week or so give me a yell or if you catch me tonight after my last exam.
Everyone is pretty helpful in getting you started if you read over the last month you'll read lots of spam from me with newbie questions. They might help you then again they might not :)
Cheers,
Marc

Sounds good to me. Where can I start? More to the point, where can I checkout the latest version of the DUG?

Dan, let me also welcome you to the Fedora Docs Project!

As lead writer for the DUG, we had a great release for FC6, then didn't manage to get an F7 version out.
So we're working in the wiki on the Fedora 8 version. You can find the FC6 basis for it at
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Docs/Drafts/DesktopUserGuide
The plan to is revise the wiki version, then publish it as an immutable web page using DocBook XML. There's plenty to do, especially on the KDE version. Don't worry too much about the overall structure. Pick a section and dive in.

OK, I'll get started on it tomorrow. I assume I'll need you to give me edit rights on the wiki (danobrien) ?

Yes, as soon as I'm able to do it. My work access has a content filter which will block my access for 5 more hours.

Doesn't seem to be working. Maybe I'm missing something. After I log in I have no extra options to edit a page. I even tried creating http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/danobrien and it told me " You are not allowed to edit this page." Am I missing something?

Checking http://fedoraproject.or/wiki/EditGroup I see your username isn't added.
The convention has been FirstnameLastname, if you don't mind. Not sure why it's not enforced via the wiki, or maybe that's actually archaic? Anyway, just for good form, I added 'DanOBrien' to EditGroup. Can you go make that account and use it? :D

I have an account, it's 'danobrien'... is it case sensitive?

Yes, DanOBrien is the one you should use, AFAIK.

Sorry to be pedantic, but I think it's actually supposed to be "DanObrien." The wiki, unfortunately, only recognizes WikiWords, not WikiWWords. I only know this because I tried to use PaulWFrields for my username for a while, then gave up and reverted it to PaulFrields.

Dan, if it doesn't work (over time), you may have to revert to DanObrien.
It's just a Fedora convention to use FirstnameLastname.

I think I found that what *doesn't* work when you do something like DanOBrien or PaulWFrields, is that simply putting that user name in a page doesn't result in an automatic link to your personal wiki page. Instead, you have to use this format:
[:PaulWFrields:PaulWFrields]
...anytime you want to put your name in. It's a bit of a pain, really... and I suppose there could some day be an automatic script that might miss one's account if named wrong. So in short, make your life easier! :-)
OK DanOBrien seems to be working. Thanks
