Self-Introduction

Hi all, Let me tell you about myself. I am the father of two children living in Washington State in the USA and a former bus driver who has returned to college to pursue a liberal arts degree. My computer experience is mostly non-professional. I wrote a user tutorial for the GIMP Animation Package (GAP) a few years ago and published it at gimptalk.com at the request of one of their moderators. It remains as a primary tutorial on that site. My other writing experience is confined to blog postings and college essays. In mid-March I plan to take a break from school and to devote my free time to contributing to this project. My computer skills include installing multiple operating systems in dual-boot configurations and solving configuration problems. I am not a computer professional; I am a hobbyist with extensive DOS, OS/2, and Windows experience and twelve years of desktop Linux experience. Some of my previous work may apply to this project. In two jobs I designed and maintained multiple web sites. For one of them I wrote a suite of bash shell scripts that automated content updates on several web sites. Fedora is my primary desktop operating system. I have used it continuously for more than two years. Previously I used K/X/Ubuntu, SuSE, Slackware, Mandrake, and Red Hat Linux beginning in 2001. From my first day with Linux, it has been my primary desktop OS. Another common way for new contributors to join in is with the Release Notes. Because these are highly sectionalized, you can work on the parts that interest you the most. Each section is called a "beat," and you can find out more from here: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Category:Documentation_beats I'm not sure you could write documentation specific for former bus drivers, but if you're seriously interested in free software graphics applications, we have basically no existing documentation for those in Fedora. In 2010, I wrote the "Musicians' Guide," about music and audio software, and I imagine the Fedora Design Team (https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Design) would support your efforts to write a similar document for graphics software. As you can imagine, this would be a very large project, but you could slowly build the guide over several releases. In fact, you could probably even copy existing documentation from other sources, then customize it to your preferences and to Fedora's requirements (mostly "how to install"). Maybe you'd be more comfortable starting with something smaller, and that's okay too. Either way, welcome to Docs! Publican 3.1

Hi all -- Just a quick heads-up on Publican status. As some of you know, 3.1 has just gone GA, and I hope to have it packaged shortly. We have a couple of problems with the 3.x series on Fedora, and a couple of implications for Fedora docs on top of that. 1. The big issue is still wkhtmltopdf. This is finally packaged well enough to get it reviewed, so I hope to start that process shortly. In the meantime, however, I plan to have the Fedora package depend on FOP. Publican will, however, default to wkhtmltopdf where it is available. We should make therefore make wkhtmltopdf packages available for Fedora docs folk to use in the meantime. 2. A bug has emerged on F18 in some of the XSL we use; this worked fine up to now, and so it looks like a change in a dependency. We haven't isolated the issue, but the workaround is simple and I'll include a patch in the version we ship. 3. A while back, we overhauled the text of the Fedora brand; I have only recently made this available for translation and will point translators to it. 4. When Publican 3 gets into the repos, we will either need to convert the existing docs site structure to the new Publican 3 structure, or force all writers and translators to stay on 2.8. Obviously, the former is preferable, but will require a freeze on publication while this happens (should hopefully be no more than a few hours) I think that's it! Stay tuned... Cheers Rudi

Hello everybody, My name is Alexander Meesters, 28 years of age, father of a beautiful daughter(and the second one is being compiled as we speak :-)), from Holland(GMT+1). I'm currently a Web-developer and Sysadmin in the adult industry. My skills range from programming to systems administration. When i wear my sysad-hat i manage, and are responsible, for about 40 servers, two of which are virtual hosts(KVM/Qemu) running 20 nodes. The systems vary from big data housing(40TB+), load-balancers, ram caches, LAMP servers, mail servers, database servers and firewalls across three different data-center environments. The question i get a lot of time is:"Why the hell do you work in the adult industry?". Well for one, its the most technical challenge one geek could ever have, cause not only must we serve our users content very quickly, we also hold databases with some pretty sensitive information. That brings me to the second, i am fascinated by security. And not just "Hacking", but also in a sense of redundancy and backups. The reason i am joining is that i believe that, in the 10+ years i've been running Linux, i have acquired knowledge that is worth sharing. And also, that if my father and a colleague of him at the time, didn't teach me(back then the internet was not accessible for mortals like us), and shared their knowledge with me, i wouldn't be who i am now. I also believe that when to start something you should always start by documenting, first the plan, then the research, then write proof of concepts, etc.. etc... Somehow i always find myself scribbling notes on my notepad. The thing i want to contribute the most to is security, since it is my fascination, ever since i had a computer. Updated Release Notes directory

I have updated RPMs for doc-publican-rpm which put the document into /usr/share/doc/<name>-<version> This changes impacts several places within d-p-r, so i would very much appreciate testing by anyone who has a chance. You can make an RPM for Release Notes or any Publican document, then install it and see that you get a menu entry that leads to the right place, and the document is installed where it should. Updated POTs for UEFI Secure Boot Guide
