Changing the colophon
by Paul W. Frields
Our release notes "Colophon," which lists all the people who have
contributed to the Release Notes, always accumulates names. In the
past, we've never stripped out any old names.
However, there is an important question we should resolve: How do we go
forward from here? Options include:
1. Leave all the names on the list.
a. ...because figuring out when someone's individual contributions are
gone is REALLY hard, and people should be credited for that work as long
as we think it might still be in the Release Notes or a translation
somewhere.
b. ...because people drift in and out of Fedora Project work, and
shuffling names might not be a good use of time.
2. Erase the whole list and start over each cycle.
a. ...because this is reflective of who's working hard on writing,
editing, translating, and packaging this edition.
b. ...because it's easier to track and makes for a more sane length
and meaningful content for the Colophon.
There are probably other options but they all involve some give and
take, and more work overall. These options are equally easy to
maintain, I think; we just need to discuss them publicly and then pick.
The FDSCo should probably decide on a policy in Wednesday's meeting, but
it would be good to hear what the L10N and Docs communities think.

publican tips
by Murray McAllister
Hi,
I have been getting mails about tips for docbook/publican, such as
chunking output, conditional tags etc. Since the publican
documentation isn't really a how-to for DocBook, I wanted to add a
page to the Fedora wiki, so that everyone could see these...
If no one objects, I'll try to add another page, such as
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/DocsProject/Publican/Publican-Tips
Thanks!
Murray.

Get Support link?
by Jonathan Roberts
Hi all,
I have no idea if there is any call for this or not, but I've just
whacked together a draft of something that I think might be useful.
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/JonathanRoberts/GetSupport
It's basically a landing page for anybody new to Fedora, who is a
*user*, and wants to get some help. Currently, the links Documentation
and Communicate are a bit vague I think, and so I tried to create a page
that pulls together content that is exclusively useful for new users. It
tells them about #fedora, fedora-list, fedora forum, and docs.fp.o,
explaining what they are where new users coming from Windows/Mac might
be less familiar (i.e. IRC).
It was partially inspired by my Dad! As I force my parents to use Fedora
I asked their opinion on the start page/home page and on the FUG. They
thought the FUG was excellent work, exactly what they needed, but the
links on the start/home page weren't clearer enough on how to get help.
With this in mind, I have also created a css mock-up for the home page
based on the spins designs that incorporates an obvious, clear, get
support link at the top :p.

Would love a bit of feedback,
Jon

documentation-guide
by Noriko Mizumoto
Hi Paul and all
As I can not see how to update pot and po files of the book for the
change to be made on the source file, I have filed the bug#441190. In
case it is already described somewhere and I just am not trying to find
seriously, just smack me as usual. And if you could be so kind and point
it for me it would be very very much appreciated.
ah... wait.
It just come up in my mind, this portion should be rather included in
Translator Quick Start Guide or something else for translators?
How you think?

[Fwd: Final Freeze coming--feature page updates needed]
by John Poelstra
This email was sent to all individual feature owners. I'm sending it a
few other place to keep everyone in the loop and to route around those
that have black-listed the feature wrangler's or are waiting for me to
send post cards ;-)
If you are depending on information about the features below you may
want to set wiki page watches to track changes and updates
Thanks,
John

Hello Feature People :)
With final development freeze coming on Tuesday, April 8, 2008 (two days
from now in most parts of the world--less in others), sadly this is one
of the last times you'll be able to receive nag mail from me for Fedora
9. ;-)
Final Development Freeze, defined here:
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/ReleaseEngineering/FinalFreezePolicy means
that all features must be at 100% completion by this date.
Yes, we know "this is Fedora" and "stuff is never 100% done" and all the
usual arguments about "what does percentage completion really mean,
etc., etc.", but for the average user and members of the other Fedora
teams it is important and very helpful to make one last update to your
feature page... and for those that will still complain, please make some
constructive suggestions for improving the process and lobby to change
it for Fedora 10 :) These feature pages are pointed to by a lot by the
press and used by many other teams to turn Fedora into a polished
looking release so your help is greatly needed and appreciated.
You have the distinct privilege of receiving this message because you
are listed as the owner for one or more features that are not listed at
100% completion, though many are very close!

I've received several questions in the past about what to do to bring a
feature page to 100% or what to do if all the advertised things on the
feature page can't be completed in time. Hopefully this helps...
1) If you implemented all of the things described on your feature page
and the package is in rawhide, update to 100%
2) If you DID NOT implement all of the things described on your feature
page
a) change the feature page to reflect all the things you DID
complete for Fedora 9
b) make sure the package is in rawhide
c) update to 100%
d) if you plan to do more unfinished exciting things in F10 move
them to a new feature page
3) If your feature page will end up being empty or very brief in order
to honestly say it is 100% done it probably should be removed from the
Fedora 9 feature list. Simply change the category of your feature page
to CategoryProposedFeature (from CategoryAcceptedFedora9) and let me know
4) If this is still confusing, please contact me :)
Thanks for your help,

Encryption and Privacy Guide ready for F9
by Eric Christensen
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----
Hash: SHA1
PART [1] of the Encryption and Privacy Guide is ready for use. The
reason I say part is because there is a lot going into this guide and
the part that is ready is the only part that really matters to F9.
Since this is the first time Fedora has advertised an encrypted file
system, this part explains how to do it and how it works. It even shows
how you can accomplish the same thing in versions F8 and before.
This page needs to be edited and converted (all the way to the "DRAFT
BELOW HERE" header). I'm going to try to be up in my office space today
so I'll be monitoring the IRC channel and e-mail.

Hi,
A big thank you to everyone who helped make the preview release notes
a success. The Beats wiki, http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Docs/Beats/,

freezing will become the Fedora 9 GA Release Notes.
At some point after 2359 UTC 2008-04-07, the GA Release Notes will be
available to L10N. For further details, refer to
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/DocsProject/Schedule
Thanks again for your help.
Regards,
Murray.
