Re: Publican and Other Langs
by Juan Rodriguez
Hi there,
I joined the Documentation Program some time ago, hoping to help write
helpful files in Spanish for Fedora Users, and while I haven't been able to
contribute anything at all yet, I would like to start doing so.
I've been testing Publican, the new Documentation Package, and while it can
create the books in English, its making the translation thats giving me
issues.
Now, I'm new to DocBook, and Publican, so I might be doing something wrong.
What I did is create a Test Book called Test_Book, using create_book --name
Test_Book.
Afterwards, I uncommented OTHER LANGS from the Makefile, removed all of them
except es-ES, then proceeded to make update-po-all.
All XMLs are turned into a .po, though they create a warning "field
'Project-Id-Version' still has initial value, then an error.
Created ../es-ES/Test_Book.po.
After: msgfmt: (null): warning: PO file header missing or invalid
warning: charset conversion will not work
msgfmt: found 1 fatal error
And Test_Book.po is completely blank.
What am I doing wrong, or is this a bug I should report? And if so, where?
Thanks for your time
-Nushio

Welcome Email
by Mike McGrath
Hey docs people! I'm working on FAS2, its getting real close. I was
wondering if someone would draft up what they want the welcome email to
say when people sign up for an account for the first time. Something to
encourage them and help them through the process of what to do after the
cla is signed.
Joining the Fedora Project is like walking into IKEA the first time. Lets
try to ease that :)

Feb 27 22:57:55 <jsmith> I'm still happy to show people how to get

toolchain for F9
by Karsten Wade
While all this toolchain talk is in the air ...
We've got several major activities going on that are relying upon our
current-and-working toolchain:
* Release notes need to build properly by 16 March[1]
* Updates to existing guides (IG, SMG) by mid-March[2]
* New guides going into Beta in March (DUG, AG)
Beyond being confident the guides can build cleanly, which Jared has
demonstrated in the one case, we need to know that they can match
whatever MUST list we put together. Some SHOULD items are OK, too.
For starters:
* Must be possible to go from Wiki to usable XML with similar
process/hassle as current pathway
* Must be able to pull book from CVS and build in Fedora 8 and Fedora 9
tests (Alpha, Beta, RC, Sulphur)
- follows the tradition of not requiring docs tools to work for Fedora
N-1
* Should be able to build in Fedora 7
* Must produce PO files that are line-for-line identical to the one
produced in the last version
- this is to minimize re-translation or having to re-check already
translated strings on content that is already translated (IG, Relnotes)
* Must process PO and POT so as to not put a burden on translation and
Transifex (line-for-line identical or close enough)
* Must be usable by Release Engineering in composing the build
* Must be hostable by Fedora Infrastructure for Docs, L10n, or RelEng
build systems
* Must have a reliable upstream, should be relied upon for at least 12
months
* Must have a packager who affirms to maintain the package, should be
affirmed for at least 12 months
* Should build RPMs that match the RPM capability of /cvs/docs
- need to list these out
Anything else?

Publican question
by Jared Smith
I'm sure I'll have more questions later, but I figured I'd throw this
one out here -- Is anyone else able to build PDFs using Publican? I've
been playing with it all weekend, but I keep getting errors from FOP
when I try to build PDFs.
(This is after I tweaked /usr/share/publican/xsl/main-pdf.xsl to pull
the import the stylesheets on the local system provided by the
docbook-style-xsl package, instead of having it pull them from the
internet every time. I'm on a very slow internet connection, and it was
timing out while trying to download these files.)
The error I"m getting is:
SEVERE: javax.xml.transform.TransformerException:

FWIW, I'm not running the very latest rawhide, but I've updated fop,
xalan, xerces, xml-commons-*, xmlgraphics-*, and the whole IcedTea stack
to the latest versions. I'm no Java or FOP guru by any stretch of the
imagination, so I'm open to any or all suggestions at this point.

Feb 20 22:06:03 <EvilBob> quaid: any updates?
Feb 20 22:06:08 <quaid> I think he and I got a good understanding last
time, and may have consensus :)
Feb 20 22:06:13 <quaid> the misunderstanding, for the record,
Feb 20 22:06:26 <quaid> was that folks thought the Single Summary is intended
Feb 20 22:06:29 <quaid> to be read from top to bottom
Feb 20 22:06:41 <quaid> rather, instead, it is meant to be a source
for other things that are themselves read alone
Feb 20 22:07:14 <quaid> so we can have slightly duplicate information
for different audiences, all in the one SingleSUmmary
Feb 20 22:07:30 <EvilBob> Sure
Feb 20 22:07:49 <quaid> otherwise, we'll have to do more work there as

Feb 20 22:15:20 <Sparks> to the Crypto Guide. i don't know how
indepth I really need to go for...

Feb 20 22:19:37 * kital has quit (Remote closed the connection)
Feb 20 22:19:57 <jmbuser> Thanks, Couf - back to quaid's question
Feb 20 22:20:04 <couf> so I'm feeling a slip coming, if we look at the
original schedule
Feb 20 22:20:20 <jmbuser> or not...
Feb 20 22:20:53 <EvilBob> quaid: I will see if I can get with poelcat

Feb 20 22:23:48 <EvilBob> Beats?
Feb 20 22:23:55 <jmbuser> EvilBob: So you and poelcat will stave off
the cold by revising the schedule?
Feb 20 22:24:02 <quaid> beats are too quiet
Feb 20 22:24:09 <EvilBob> how is the Release notes coming?
Feb 20 22:24:14 <quaid> we need to push on all the sub-projects we
know to start putting in their stuff
Feb 20 22:24:29 <jmbuser> especially ConsoleKit/PolicyKit inclusion?
Feb 20 22:24:40 <quaid> fortunately I think a lot of stuff is
happening in the Features that usually happens in the Beats
Feb 20 22:25:12 <jmbuser> true
Feb 20 22:25:20 <EvilBob> quaid: is that going to be enough?
Feb 20 22:26:45 <EvilBob> OK next
Feb 20 22:27:02 <jmbuser> Meeting Time settled or need more discussion?
Feb 20 22:27:05 <EvilBob> I know quaid will answer when he has a chance
Feb 20 22:27:13 * couf probably going to disappear in a few, freenode
server reboot
Feb 20 22:27:17 <EvilBob> Meeting time
Feb 20 22:27:25 <stickster> EvilBob: Installation Guide?
Feb 20 22:27:28 <EvilBob> is this good for everyone?
Feb 20 22:27:41 <EvilBob> stickster: yes?
Feb 20 22:27:57 <EvilBob> stickster: I noted it above
Feb 20 22:28:04 <stickster> Sorry, I looked back and missed it
Feb 20 22:28:22 <EvilBob> stickster: It's OK
Feb 20 22:28:59 <jmbuser> Concerning the meeting time - this works for me
Feb 20 22:29:04 <quaid> EvilBob: probably not enough
Feb 20 22:29:38 <EvilBob> the IG is going to take three phases, Update
existing content, Return/rewrite older dropped content, add new
features
Feb 20 22:29:57 <EvilBob> at least that is what we see right now
Feb 20 22:30:36 <EvilBob> quaid: OK I will look through and start
bugging people, will CC the list when I do so via email
Feb 20 22:31:22 * pingou has quit (Read error: 104 (Connection reset by peer))
Feb 20 22:31:24 <EvilBob> Meeting time is good

Feb 20 22:32:10 <EvilBob> jsmith??
Feb 20 22:32:17 <EvilBob> you are the odd man out
Feb 20 22:32:24 <jsmith> Making it Wednesday permanently?
Feb 20 22:32:28 <EvilBob> jsmith: is this workable?
Feb 20 22:32:36 <couf> fine for me
Feb 20 22:32:42 <jsmith> Sure... and hour earlier would work better
for me, but if this works best for everyone else, I'll make it work
Feb 20 22:32:44 <EvilBob> jsmith: nothing is perenent
Feb 20 22:32:46 <quaid> ok2me
Feb 20 22:33:10 <EvilBob> permanent
Feb 20 22:33:25 <jmbuser> jsmith: Thanks for the flexibility.
Feb 20 22:33:25 <EvilBob> but "for now"
Feb 20 22:33:28 <jsmith> OK, sounds good
Feb 20 22:33:30 <jsmith> +1
Feb 20 22:33:36 <jmbuser> +1
Feb 20 22:33:40 <EvilBob> +1

Feb 20 22:34:06 <jsmith> And since stickster is away, I'll put in his
vote as well ;-)
Feb 20 22:34:06 <EvilBob> stickster is a +1
Feb 20 22:34:17 * dstarh (n=dstarh__(a)corp.ediets.com) has left
#fedora-meeting ("Leaving")
Feb 20 22:34:21 <Southern_Gentlem> stickster quaid VOTE
Feb 20 22:34:26 <EvilBob> jsmith: back off, I am driving this train
Feb 20 22:34:33 <EvilBob> LOL
Feb 20 22:34:38 <quaid> 'sides I already voted :)
Feb 20 22:34:41 <stickster> +1
Feb 20 22:34:50 <jmbuser> OK, so Time: 1900 Hrs UTC it is
Feb 20 22:35:02 <jmbuser> Date: Wednesday
Feb 20 22:35:03 <quaid> in that I made the proposal!
Feb 20 22:35:03 <stickster> What was that issue again?
Feb 20 22:35:03 <stickster> j/k
Feb 20 22:35:03 <quaid> heh
Feb 20 22:35:03 <EvilBob> We have all in
Feb 20 22:35:04 <jsmith> It's anonymous! ;-)
Feb 20 22:35:07 * DanseMakabre (i=pat(a)bobo.ds5.agh.edu.pl) has joined
#fedora-meeting
Feb 20 22:35:10 <quaid> EvilBob: btw, I started an email to the list
about vice chairs and all that jazz, but never got in completed :)
Feb 20 22:35:11 <jsmith> Or magnanimous... or something...
Feb 20 22:35:17 <quaid> but I did want to get that into the agenda
Feb 20 22:35:45 <couf> so Leadership then?
Feb 20 22:35:53 <jmbuser> quaid: So you did
Feb 20 22:35:57 <EvilBob> Since FUDcon and before we have been talking
about our leadership
Feb 20 22:36:31 <EvilBob> it has been known that for some time now
quaid has expressed interest in getting replaced
Feb 20 22:36:54 <EvilBob> We were going to railroad stickster in to
that job but he found another one
Feb 20 22:37:25 <EvilBob> We have done a poor job of grooming leadership
Feb 20 22:37:42 <EvilBob> we have focused on the few and left many behind
Feb 20 22:37:57 <quaid> well, we've been focused on making a system to
write content
Feb 20 22:38:00 <quaid> and teach ppl how to do that
Feb 20 22:38:09 <quaid> which has been pretty successful itself
Feb 20 22:38:22 <EvilBob> What i suggested to quaid was a Vice Chair
that is, a Chair in training
Feb 20 22:39:00 <quaid> right, which forces the current Chair (me) to
get whatever down in the wiki that is missing and to train the VC to
do that in the future.
Feb 20 22:39:14 <EvilBob> a 18month? term that would include 6months
of learning the ropes and 6months of teaching the next one
Feb 20 22:39:25 <quaid> also, a VC gives a chance to split up active
leadership duties more, so more gets done
Feb 20 22:40:10 <EvilBob> so with our next election we would be voting
in a Vice Chair
Feb 20 22:40:36 <EvilBob> this Vice chair becomes the big deal after 6 months
Feb 20 22:40:37 <Sparks> ?
Feb 20 22:40:47 * herlo (n=clints(a)166-70-63-209.ip.xmission.com) has
joined #fedora-meeting
Feb 20 22:40:51 <couf> fair proposition
Feb 20 22:40:53 <EvilBob> Sparks: Yes?
Feb 20 22:41:00 <Sparks> When are elections and how is voting handled?
Feb 20 22:41:33 <EvilBob> Sparks: FESCo picks it's leadership
Feb 20 22:41:53 <EvilBob> Sparks: the group of 7 votes
Feb 20 22:42:02 <Sparks> Ahhh... okay...
Feb 20 22:42:25 <jmbuser> FAMSCo works the same way
Feb 20 22:42:25 <EvilBob> Sparks: the membership picks FDSCo
Feb 20 22:42:33 <EvilBob> FDSCo picks it;s leader
Feb 20 22:42:57 <Sparks> That works. Thanks
Feb 20 22:43:01 <EvilBob> NP
Feb 20 22:43:37 <EvilBob> I would like to ask jmbuser if he is
interested in becoming our next leader
Feb 20 22:44:01 <EvilBob> or anyone else in FDSCo
Feb 20 22:44:18 <EvilBob> was that to obvious?
Feb 20 22:44:20 <EvilBob> lOL
Feb 20 22:44:27 * Southern_Gentlem does a happy dance
Feb 20 22:44:38 <jmbuser> Perhaps someone should propose and someone
second the motion
Feb 20 22:45:02 <quaid> to be clearer
Feb 20 22:45:03 <EvilBob> Well we do not want to actually railroad
anyone, are you willing?
Feb 20 22:45:30 <jmbuser> If everybody else is OK with it, I'm willing
Feb 20 22:46:05 <EvilBob> I would like to motion that we appoint
jmbuser our Vice Chair
Feb 20 22:46:28 <quaid> Bob and I have been discussing all this in
asides, and also talking with John (jmbuser)
Feb 20 22:46:41 <quaid> because he has been showing interest in leading more
Feb 20 22:46:48 <quaid> but we haven't had asides with everyone here
Feb 20 22:46:54 <EvilBob> right
Feb 20 22:46:55 <quaid> so this is the first chance all of you are
hearing about it
Feb 20 22:47:03 <quaid> and we might want to give a few days to think
about it all?
Feb 20 22:47:07 <quaid> or not, which we can vote on
Feb 20 22:47:25 <EvilBob> I would think that we would vote next week
Feb 20 22:47:38 * petreu (n=peter@fedora/Standby) has joined #fedora-meeting
Feb 20 22:47:59 <EvilBob> did we lose the server couf is on?
Feb 20 22:48:04 <jmbuser> That works for me
Feb 20 22:48:07 <couf> not yet, sorry
Feb 20 22:48:10 <EvilBob> OK
Feb 20 22:48:11 <couf> was distracted
Feb 20 22:48:36 <couf> jmbuser++
Feb 20 22:48:46 <EvilBob> OK we have a second
Feb 20 22:49:07 <EvilBob> Do we want to vote this week or next?
Feb 20 22:49:18 <EvilBob> I am fine with either
Feb 20 22:50:09 <quaid> any objection
Feb 20 22:50:12 <couf> yeah fine both ways too
Feb 20 22:50:13 <quaid> to voting about it right now?
Feb 20 22:50:16 <Southern_Gentlem> quaid, if you operate on roberts
rule of order say next week
Feb 20 22:50:22 <quaid> stickster, jsmith ?
Feb 20 22:50:29 * bpepple|lt has quit ("Ex-Chat")
Feb 20 22:50:33 <quaid> Southern_Gentlem: eh, we're pretty informal there :)
Feb 20 22:50:49 <jsmith> quaid: I'm OK...
Feb 20 22:50:54 <EvilBob> We are almost out of time, lets address it
first thing next week
Feb 20 22:50:59 <quaid> yeah
Feb 20 22:51:02 <jmbuser> Agreed
Feb 20 22:51:02 <quaid> we can then discuss it on list
Feb 20 22:51:03 <jsmith> (Sorry, phone call)
Feb 20 22:51:07 <quaid> make sure we aren't missing anything
Feb 20 22:51:15 <EvilBob> that will let our people weigh in on the list also
Feb 20 22:51:21 <quaid> I want people who are not in FDSCo to get the
implication
Feb 20 22:51:27 <quaid> that there is room to be a leader here, etc.
Feb 20 22:51:31 <stickster> List is fine although I remember seeing
this a while back in quaid's blog
Feb 20 22:51:35 <couf> I'll try to get something from glezos this
weekend on this
Feb 20 22:51:36 <stickster> jmbuser++ by the way
Feb 20 22:51:45 <quaid> stickster: oh is that where I wrote about it? :)
Feb 20 22:51:47 <couf> seeing him this weekend (fosdem)
Feb 20 22:51:53 <quaid> fosdem++
Feb 20 22:51:54 <stickster> I think you did
Feb 20 22:52:02 <EvilBob> OK AOB?
Feb 20 22:52:02 <stickster> it all kind of jams together after a while.
Feb 20 22:52:10 <stickster> I write things down so I don't have to remember it.
Feb 20 22:52:16 <stickster> I mean, HAHAHAHAHA
Feb 20 22:52:17 <quaid> my only OB was to make sure we did a schedule
update and sanity check
Feb 20 22:52:31 <EvilBob> quaid: I added that to my list
Feb 20 22:52:44 <jmbuser> Publican familiarity, any thoughts?
Feb 20 22:53:07 <jmbuser> jsmith: Have you ironed out the issues you had?
Feb 20 22:53:09 <EvilBob> quaid: I will touch on that with poelcat,
you and stickster before the next meeting
Feb 20 22:54:14 <jsmith> jmbuser: Yes, I've ironed them out
Feb 20 22:54:31 <jmbuser> jsmith: impressions?
Feb 20 22:54:41 <jsmith> I'd be happy to help people get up to speed
with Publican
Feb 20 22:54:44 <jsmith> jmbuser: I love it
Feb 20 22:54:57 <jsmith> jmbuser: I wasn't very familiar with the old
system, but publican is very nice
Feb 20 22:55:02 <couf> EvilBob: add me to that list
Feb 20 22:55:06 <jsmith> jmbuser: I'm sure we'll run into some snags
(translations, etc.)
Feb 20 22:55:15 <jsmith> jmbuser: But it's got a "two thumbs up" from me
Feb 20 22:55:33 <EvilBob> couf: yup
Feb 20 22:55:38 <couf> danke
Feb 20 22:56:25 <jmbuser> jsmith: That's good to hear - the "old
system" also works well and I think we need to stick to it for the F9
release
Feb 20 22:56:30 <couf> motion to close?
Feb 20 22:56:47 <EvilBob> seconded
Feb 20 22:56:59 <jmbuser> Anything else - if not.. let's call it
Feb 20 22:57:15 <jsmith> jmbuser: Yeah, I hear you there
