some relatively correct "getting started with java" docs?
by Robert P. J. Day
is there a decent HOWTO on getting started with java under f8t2?
that is, with the java packages that come with f8, as opposed to
having to install sun's (or someone else's) java? thanks.

Make+ing a HTML document out of translation
by Ruturaj
Hi,
I've created a hi_IN.po (for Hindi translation, I hope the file name
is correct) under
release-notes-F-7/release-notes/po
and I've kindof completed more than 30% of translation for it, and I
now want to check how it fits into the HTML documentaton, cause while
translating the po files really doesn't give u the feel of the whole
document.
Any pointers, links would do.
I tried searching the wiki, Readmes, etc but failed.

XML/xsltproc-based toolchain for TLDP documentation?
by Robert P. J. Day
it was suggested to me that i ask on this list -- does someone have
a fully-functional toolchain based on docbook and XML and xsltproc for
generating the various output formats for a TLDP document that runs on
fedora?
i've asked on the TLDP list but what i seem to be hearing is that
the standard toolchain involves SGML and DSSSL and jade, and i'd
rather use the newer stuff.
for now, i'd be happy with just generating TLDP-compliant HTML, and
i can install FOP later for the PDF output. so does anyone have such
a toolchain up and running based on nothing more than regular fedora
packages? thanks. (i'm running f8t-whatever at the moment.)
rday
p.s. another option would be a toolchain that works similar to the
TLDP one, perhaps whatever is used for official fedora docs. i
wouldn't mind looking at that, either. again, thanks.

cla_redhat
by Murray McAllister
Hi Everyone,
I was wondering how to request access to cla_redhat, instead of signing
the CLA. Do I request this by modifying my Fedora account?
Thanks,
Murray.

Kindly Cast ur Vote: Text Vs. Interactive flash/video guides
by Mustafa Qasim
Hello!
I was wondering that how much it would be beneficial to develop
interactive flash/video guides instead of long text guides for certain
purposes like teaching newbie how to use the tools required by a project and
let him feel comfortable with the Fedora Project environment in a short time
so, he can start the work(that is actually needed) instead of wasting his
first few days asking how to create account, where to create the keys and
bla bla bla.
Do you think it can be helpful for home users for whom CVS and GPG Keys etc
are alien?
Kindly share your thought. Please reply with
+1 - If you think yes
-1 - If you think not
further suggestions/comments are more then welcomed.

Self-Introduction: Murray McAllister
by Murray McAllister
Hi,
My name is Murray McAllister, I've just moved to Brisbane (Australia) to
start my new job with Red Hat Asia Pacific as a content author.
I'm really keen to contribute into open source but finding it a bit hard
since I'm not a developer. I was then blessed with this job and thought
it would be a great opportunity to be able to give something back to
open source.
My goals in the Fedora Project:
- contribute as much as I can. I think some small tutorials (perhaps
network configuration, user management (system-config-users/useradd,
groupadd etc), permissions would be a good start/practice.
I am currently writing errata for RHEL 5, perhaps I could use what I
have learned there to help in areas of the Fedora Project (release notes
perhaps?). I have done a lot of work with BIND so maybe once I settle
in I could start contributing more in that area (perhaps larger tutorials).
- one of my 'goals' within Red Hat is to document 3 open source writing
tools. Perhaps I could somehow combine that with a project for Fedora.
I'd like to think I have good computer skills. I have been using Linux
for 4-5 years (started with Red Hat 9, have played with SuSE, Debian,
Slackware) with my main distributions being Ubuntu and Fedora (currently
learning RHEL 5).
My main interest is Linux, networking and security. After finishing
school I worked in 7 schools doing network support. That was for 9
months, then for 1 year I worked as a network administrator where I was
contracted out to 6-7 corporate customers. Then I scored my dream job
in open source, which is why I'm here now.
In my spare time I have no life to speak of so I try to fill the void
with work or study (usually networking, but now leaning more towards
anything Linux) :)
It would be a lie to say I'm a great writer, in fact before I joined Red
Hat I really had no writing experience at all (well I still don't ;)).
I wrote a fairly long paper on DNS and BIND, but that is about it. I
was hoping I would be able to learn more at Red Hat, improve my writing,
and then be able to contribute back into the community - hopefully there
is a place for me here!
If there is anything else anyone would like to know, please don't
hesitate to ask.
Kind Regards,
Murray.

Release Notes for F8 - first POT drop
by Paul W. Frields
Greetings L10N folk!
Due to scarce personnel resources we are running a couple of days behind
our schedule[1] for the Docs Project. However, I am getting the Release
Notes ready for a POT drop today. Although the schedule currently has a
"deadline" of 23 September, we will be extending this until about 26
September (2007-09-26).
However, please keep in mind that your team does *NOT* need to complete
ALL work by that date. Due to last-minute bug fixes and other errata,
you can expect a few string changes over the next few weeks, although we
will strive to keep them to an absolute minimum. You will need to
complete all work by the listed date of 21 October (2007-10-21), subject
to change if there are slips affecting the overall release schedule[2].
In the past we have included only finished release notes in the test3
release of Fedora, but that will NOT be the case for F8 test3. Any team
that works on their release notes translation will have their work
included in F8 test3. We would still like to include only finished
translations in the final version to emphasize the professional polish
of the distribution, but since I now have greater access to the
fedora-release-notes package in the distribution, we will be more able
to bring an update package into Fedora 8 during its cycle if additional
languages are finished by some deadline date on which we can jointly
agree.
Reminder: the full fedora-release-notes package includes material from
the following modules:
* release-notes
* homepage
* about-fedora <-- (Almost no changes since F7)
* readme
* readme-live-image
* readme-burning-isos <-- (Almost no changes since F7)
For the best locale representation, make sure you visit each of these
modules for updates. Also, please remember to check that the po/LINGUAS
file in each module is updated to include your locale, so it will be
built by our tools! Thanks to everyone for your great work, it's a
pleasure to work with you. If you have any problems, please contact us
at fedora-docs-list.
