Ah right - I had done an install from scratch with a fresh
partitioning so a USB LiveOS was what I had to use.
Anyway, I finally got around to booting on a F28 Live USB and the
sound was just as bad - so it looks like it was not a kernel problem.
Maybe there has been a hardware failure in the either the headphones
or the built-in sound card? It was time for me to get a new, better
set of headphones anyway so I will follow up here when they arrive and
I can test again.
It looks like it was a coincidental hardware problem that developed with
the headphones when I upgraded Fedora. Thanks to everyone who
