It gets even more interesting. After installation, I dropped the F28 VM's
memory allocation back down to 1 GB. I have a bunch of other Linux VMs
(Debian, OpenSUSE, RHEL, etc.) that all run comfortably in 1 GB, so why not
F28? The VM was extremely sluggish when I booted it up. Sure enough, it
was swapping. I shut it down, gave it 2 GB again, and now it boots up quite
snappily. It appears that, with a default GNOME install, just logging in
one user eats more than 1 GB. Here are all of the processes that require
more than 2% of the RAM:

The resident size of those processes adds up to 1161988 KB. There's our 1
GB. And I haven't even run anything I want to run yet.
Consistent with my earlier findings. I have no idea why packagekitd or
gnome-software are even running (by default) on liveOS. The double
gnome-shell with extra for gdm is not a bug per se but is known about
and is suboptimal. Those three make up about 25% of the total used.
It's pretty oinky. Also there's some separate memory reduction work
sup posedly happening for gnome-shell but I'm not sure what the status
of that is.
