Any plans to incorporate into rawhide?

was about to ask the same? what are the compiz plans for f8? will compiz-fusion replace compiz and berly?
I am not sure about rawhide but it has a private repo as if now for Fedora7. http://blog.kagesenshi.org for more info.

You'll have to compile it yourself due to the libwnck-1.so.18 dependency. Rawhide is currently at .22 something.

A few of us (the current beryl maintainers, compiz maintainers and the individual responsible for the above packages) just started discussing the path forward earlier this week.

Hi there, I'm the person responsible for those packages ( I have plenty of aliases :P ) .. the packages are still not good imo ..
compiz fusion introduced lots of changes in the core compiz packages and some stuff, like desktop-effects, simply breaks ..
these are several issues that I believe need to be resolved .. and I need ur opinion about them ..
- desktop-effects menu does not JustWork(tm) .. - which configuration plugin to use? gconf or ccp? the previous compiz uses gconf .. if we are going to use ccp, desktop-effects needs a rewrite .. - the default installation provides several plugins that might pull more dependencies eg: fuse. to_split or not to_split
I just built today git checkout and they are available here
http://devel.foss.org.my/~kagesenshi/repo/private/testing/
feel free to play around with them ..
about desktop-effects .. for systems with AIGLX, an environment var need to be exported before launching it to make it work
export LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT=1

I think ccp would be better, it also have a gconf-backend. about desktop-effects: there is not much that need to be changed there... if we decide on what to use I can provide patches if needed ;)

do you have a list of this deps? we could split it into compiz-fusion-plugins and compiz-fusion-plugins-extras

about desktop-effects .. for systems with AIGLX, an environment var
need to be exported before launching it to make it work
export LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT=1
this should then be added to gnome-wm to because on login desktop-effects is not inolved.

after I applied some of the patches from previous compiz package (with some modification in it) , and a little one-line patch in desktop-effects.c to load gconf plugin properly , desktop-effects is now back working .. but gnome-wm need some modfication to make compiz start on login
I didnt apply the patches before because they was being rejected ..
Like dragoran said, I also agree that ccp is a better choice .. because if we insist in using gconf, desktop-effects and gnome-wm need to do checking whether to load ccp or to load gconf plugin .. plus, the compizconfig-settings-manager requires user to use ccp plugin and it doesnt work with gconf plugin (compizconfig-backend-gconf != gconf plugin) ..
for ccp, desktop-effects surely requires patching because the current desktop-effects is using gconf and not libcompizconfig ..

yes you only have to load the glib plugin before loading gconf ... attached patch fixes this for gnome-wm

+1 also using ccp allows us to use the compiz-settings tools and not require user to use gconf-editor.

it doesn't have to be exported. just call setenv() in desktop-effects.c and in gnome-wm start compiz with LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT=1 compiz ...
btw. I would suggest to use --ignore-desktop-hints by default. because else compiz uses viewports *and* workspaces at the same time when started via desktop-effects ...which is just weird.

some cards doesnt require the env export (eg: nvidia) .. and for fglrx, it require a LD_PRELOAD to a library file from fglrx driver package instead (I heard XGL no longer required .. I dont have any ati cards , couldnt test it) ..
ref: http://forums.opencompositing.org/viewtopic.php?f=51&t=758#p6439
aiglx-default.patch and tfp-server-extension.patch already removed the requirement for LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT .. so this is no longer a problem ..
those 2 patches were taken from compiz 0.3.6 src.rpm btw ..

about the gnome-wm patch .. aint that need to be applied in gnome-session rpm?? ..
another thing . I just added fusion-icon packages into the repo .. fusion-icon is an app similar to beryl-manager ..

To make this working compiz need to use texture copy instead of texture_from_pixmap method[1] (because of the fact the fglrx driver don't have support for texture_from_pixmap). That functionality can be ported from beryl. Maybe a little patch to compiz must applied too[2]
If that's doable, I could happily forgot that nightmare Xgl review ;-)

that should be done upstream but I doubt that david would merge this in compiz-core ... is it possible to do it as a plugin? create any required hocks to compiz and send that patch upstream.

Maybe; but adding hacks to workaround a known-broken piece of proprietary software instead of getting the recent R300/Avivo drivers working properly for AIGLX seems entirely like a step backwards to me...

Well, I have just saying this to let know that the fglrx driver *cannot* be used with AIGLX without the above hacks and at this time we don't have Xgl in Fedora so in my eyes a choice must be done. Using XGL as a temporary hack or making temporary hacks to let users use compiz with AIGLX. If we don't do one of them, then we forgot a big part of the Fedora users.
Yes, ATI driver suck for many reasons proprietary/not intensive developed/etc... but many people have such cards and saying that we don't care about it is just saying we don't care about a big part of our users, I think that's not good for Fedora. I'm personally sure that many people have switch to GNU/Linux these last year just to have a wobbly desktop with all these eye candy stuffs. I like eye candy as a awesome propaganda piece for the GNU/Linux desktops too.

Unfortunately no, that don't work out of the box and the copy method don't have many chance to be add to compiz, maybe like dragoran say that can be implement as a plugin?

great ;)
some comments:
def env_nvidia(): if not getoutput('xdpyinfo 2>/dev/null|grep NV-GLX') == '': print '* nvidia found, exporting: __GL_YIELD=nothing ' return '__GL_YIELD=nothing ' else: return ''
this is no longer needed when the cfs scheduler is used which is in the rawhide kernels right now and should go upstream in kernel 2.6.23.
don't just print errors like "can't start compiz" uses gtk.MessageDialog with gtk.MESSAGE_ERROR.

I have see that there too but on my box LibGL* files don't contain .xlibmesa extension. To be sure, I have build the RPM packages from the ATI installer and no trace of this extension there too, so the libGL with this extension come probably from packages for another distrib.
rpm -qlp ATI-* | grep -i libgl on the generated package returns: /usr/lib/fglrx/libGL.so.1 /usr/lib/fglrx/libGL.so.1.2 /usr/lib/fglrx/libGL.so

Beryl's web site says the name Beryl is done. Everything forth has been ported to the Compiz name with their merger. Looks like the core package is still just compiz but some of the extra stuff is compiz-fusion.
