Uhm, no one is forcing you to use NetworkManager just yet so there is
not really any regression.
Which is why people complaining so far are few.
Btw, the price we pay to support two
networking configuration stacks is higher than you think.
Probably.
But no one advocated two config stacks - just one that took care of the
whole problem-space (which includes the no-gui-nor-user-logged-in,
many-users-logged-in, gui-user, tui-over-ssh-user)
