I thought we ended up on sha256, but it's been so long since this
work was ready to go, I admit I don't recall. ;) sha512 is fine with
me too.
Last time I worked on this we were still talking about sha512, but it's
possible you (the releng team) changed your mind since it's been a long
time indeed and I haven't followed up since.
Note that the server code expects sha512, not sha256:

So some more code would need changed to move to sha256, but I'm not
sure it's worth the effort.
