I can't answer the _detailed_ part of your question, but, F18
has version 1.0.4 of the open source Nouveau driver, where as F17 shipped
with a git snapshot named '0.0.16-34.20110720gitb806e3f' and later updated
to '0.0.16-37.20120306gitf5d1cd2'.
So, it's worth testing.
A lot of the important bits of nouveau (and all modern drivers) now
reside in the kernel as part of KMS, so F18-as-shipped would be
different from F17-as-shipped wrt nouveau even if the
xorg-x11-drv-nouveau package hadn't changed.
of course, we now keep legacy releases up-to-date kernel-wise, so in
many ways, up-to-date f17 will have almost the same NVIDIA support as
up-to-date f18. wheels within wheels...
